Pénjamo can be viewed through two cultural-historical lenses: the city itself is shaped by religious buildings, devotion to Our Lady of Remedies and the architecture of Mercado Hidalgo. Nearby, Plazuelas and Corralejo de Hidalgo offer additional destinations in the municipality, but outside the city. This distinction can help you plan your trip and decide whether to focus on architectural history in the city or on archaeological and culinary themes in the surrounding area.

Churches and Local History

Nuestra Señora de los Remedios is the oldest temple in the city of Pénjamo and dates back to the 16th century. Construction of the Santuario de los Remedios began in 1543 and was not completed until 1960. Its construction history thus spans several generations. Devotion to Our Lady of Remedies is also considered long-standing and deeply felt among the people of Pénjamo. Religious history is therefore reflected both in the buildings and in local tradition.

The Parroquia de San Francisco in Pénjamo was built at the beginning of the 18th century and burned down in 1815, losing part of its former appearance. The baptismal register of Miguel Hidalgo is kept at the Parroquia de San Francisco de Asís in Pénjamo. On August 15, 1750, Cristóbal Hidalgo and Ana María Gallaga Mandarte were married at the Parroquia de San Francisco in Pénjamo. These historical connections add the family history of Father Hidalgo to the architectural history.

The Templo de Guadalupe was built between 1859 and 1869. By contrast, the Templo de San Antonio stands out for being built entirely of stone. These sites offer different points of comparison for sacred architecture: the construction period is the focus at the Templo de Guadalupe, while the material is the defining feature of the Templo de San Antonio. Together with the older churches, they offer different perspectives on Pénjamo’s religious architecture.

Market Architecture and Cultural Venues

Mercado Hidalgo de Pénjamo has a portal-like façade with neoclassical columns, a balustrade and a curved pediment. The columns and balustrade divide the façade, while the curved pediment provides a distinctive finish. This makes the market building an architectural contrast to the city’s religious buildings.

The Auditorio Joaquín Pardavé and the Taller Galería Ahuehuete are also located downtown. Both are facilities of the Coordinación Casa de Cultura Plazuelas Pénjamo. These venues add institutional cultural connections to the picture of the city center.

Archaeology and Regional Themes Nearby

The archaeological site of Plazuelas is located near the community of Las Plazuelas (San Juan el Alto), in the municipality of Pénjamo and outside the city. It comprises seven buildings on three hillsides, separated by two ravines: the Barranca de Los Cuijes to the west and the Barranca del Agua Nacida to the east. Plazuelas’ spatial layout sets it apart from the individual religious buildings in the city: here, the buildings, hillsides and ravines together form part of the site’s character.

Another nearby destination is the Parador Turístico Corralejo in Corralejo de Hidalgo, a community in the municipality of Pénjamo. It is home to the interactive Museo Interactivo Hidalgo Niño, which explores the childhood, origins and formative influences of Father Hidalgo. Traditional cuisine, typical sweets and regional products are also offered at the same parador. Historical themes and regional products are thus found side by side here. Since current operating details may change, it is best to check them before visiting.

For your trip planning, the main themes are easy to distinguish: Pénjamo itself is known for its religious architecture, Mercado Hidalgo and local connections to Hidalgo; nearby, you can also visit the archaeological site of Plazuelas and the museum and regional products in Corralejo. This can help you decide whether to focus on the city’s history or include places and themes from the wider municipality.
