Pueblo Nuevo: Rock Landscapes, Forests and Waterfalls
Accommodation in Pueblo Nuevo
In Pueblo Nuevo, striking landscapes and active outdoor experiences go hand in hand. Parque Natural Mexiquillo brings together forests, mountain scenery, a waterfall, tunnels, cabins and rock formations. At JardĂn de Piedras, large rock formations resemble natural sculptures; some are more than eight meters tall. The birdlife is another special feature: Pueblo Nuevo is among the Mexican municipalities with one of the highest rates of endemic bird species.
Forests, Water and Expansive Views
In the Mexiquillo area, Cascadas de Mexiquillo combines a pine forest with hiking trails, rock formations and a waterfall. For a different view of the Sierra Madre Occidental, visit Mirador Santa Teresa, which is also suitable for photography. Be prepared for terrain and weather conditions that can change quickly. Sturdy footwear and keeping a safe distance from edges are recommended.
Puentecillas is an ecotourism center in the Sierra of Pueblo Nuevo. Its features include a lake, cabins, viewpoints and hiking trails in a forested landscape. To get there, take the El Salto–Pueblo Nuevo road to kilometer 16, then continue for about five kilometers on an unpaved road. Road conditions can change; check them before setting out.
Mirador El Espinazo del Diablo is located on the Durango–Mazatlán free highway. Across from it, canyons and peaks of the Sierra Madre Occidental shape the view. Road conditions and access to the viewpoint may vary.
Get Active Outdoors
The old railway tunnels of Mexiquillo were built for a rail line that was never completed. Today, they are part of an adventure route that you can explore on foot, by bicycle or on guided tours. Local conditions may vary. ChavarrĂa Viejo is also home to Parque La Pirámide, a nature and adventure park with hiking trails, zip lines, a via ferrata and climbing opportunities.
In Ejido Mil Diez, near El Salto, lies the 18-meter-high Cascada Mil Diez. A suspension bridge in front of the waterfall combines views of the water with an additional adventure experience. The site also has cabins and outdoor areas for walking, relaxing, taking photos and enjoying nature-based activities. Facilities and the availability of activities may change.
Forest and water also define Cascada El RincĂłn de ChavarrĂa Viejo, which is suitable for hiking and nature photography. If you are interested in a more remote route, Bosque Escondido offers a trail through pine forests and canyons to a natural area. Preparation and experience are required.
Historic Sites and Local Traditions
Historic monuments in Pueblo Nuevo include Templo parroquial La PusĂsima ConcepciĂłn (San Francisco de AsĂs) and Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Their designation as historic monuments makes them notable cultural landmarks in Pueblo Nuevo.
Traditional crafts and cuisine are also part of local heritage. Furniture made from Manzanillo roots is among the crafts of Pueblo Nuevo. Traditional cuisine includes pulque made from corn, fermented in the sun. Together with the churches, this cultural heritage contrasts with the surrounding forests, rocky landscapes and waterfalls.
