Discover El Salto
Accommodation in El Salto
El Salto is known for its forested landscapes. Mountains, rivers, and pine forests surround the town, giving a trip a clear focus on nature. Other highlights include the Mirador La Quebrada lookout, the Museo Comunitario AlhĂ de El Salto, and the Feria de la Madera. This gives you two main ways to plan your visit: focus on landscapes and views, or plan a stay around the Feria, held annually in May.
Views and landscapes around El Salto
The Mirador La Quebrada offers a panoramic viewpoint over the mountainous landscape around El Salto. It is located beside the Durango–Mazatlán highway, making it a specific landmark to use when planning your trip. The first phase of the project included viewing areas, glass railings, lighting, monumental signs bearing the name El Salto, and a zip line. Check current operating conditions locally; in particular, confirm whether the zip line is operating.
Museum and Feria de la Madera
The Museo Comunitario Alhà de El Salto is located in El Salto, Pueblo Nuevo, Durango. A 2008 report describes artifacts illustrating the region’s history of timber harvesting, as well as archaeological pieces. If these exhibits are especially important to you, check in advance which items are currently on display.
The Feria de la Madera is held annually in May. The 2025 Feria de la Madera featured a traditional lumberjack competition. If the event is the reason for your trip, check the dates for that year’s edition before planning your trip around it.
Nature destinations in the wider Pueblo Nuevo destination
The wider Pueblo Nuevo destination has other nature spots to visit. Cascada Mil Diez is located in Ejido Mil Diez in Pueblo Nuevo, near El Salto, and is 18 meters high. There is a suspension bridge in front of the waterfall, as well as cabins and outdoor areas for walking, relaxing, taking photos, and enjoying nature activities. As facilities may change and cabin availability can vary, check conditions in advance.
Parque Natural Mexiquillo in Pueblo Nuevo brings together forests, rock formations, a waterfall, tunnels, cabins, and mountain landscapes. In the JardĂn de Piedras, large rock formations resemble natural sculptures; some are more than eight meters tall. The old railway tunnels were built for a rail line that was never completed and are now part of an adventure route that can be explored on foot, by bicycle, or on guided tours. Local conditions may vary. The options offer contrasting natural scenery: the waterfall and suspension bridge at Mil Diez, or the rock formations and old tunnels in Mexiquillo.
Plan your hotel search around your reason for traveling
First, decide on your dates and main reason for traveling. If you’re visiting for the Feria, check the specific dates for that year’s edition; the annual event takes place in May. For a nature trip, decide whether to focus on El Salto itself or on additional destinations in the wider Pueblo Nuevo area.
