Coyacán: Museums, History, and Green Spaces
Accommodation in Coyacán
Art, family history, historic sites, and green space give Coyacán its distinct character. If you’re looking for a hotel, these interests can help you shape your stay around a particular theme: the work and lives of the Kahlo family, architecture and remembrance, or outdoor exercise. A visit to the market offers another focus of its own.
Museums: Art, Family History, and Collections
Casa Azul is located on Calle de Londres in Coyoacán. Four years after the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo’s death, it was converted into a museum in 1958. By contrast, the Museo Casa Kahlo focuses on the family’s domestic life, genealogy, and private life. The kitchen and dining room retain their original furnishings; the kitchen wall also features the mural “El mesón de los gorriones,” painted by Frida Kahlo.
The genealogical hall at the Museo Casa Kahlo displays the family tree, along with historical photographs and portraits of Guillermo Kahlo and Matilde Calderón. The Estudio de Guillermo Kahlo and the Cuarto Oscuro expand on this focus with historical cameras, original negatives, and architectural photographs from the Porfiriato. This allows visitors to explore family history, living spaces, and photography within a single museum.
The Museo Frida Kahlo offers workshops designed specifically for children. They introduce the painter’s world and the importance of her art to Mexican culture. Program availability may change; check before your visit to see whether the workshops are being offered.
The Museo Anahuacalli focuses on Diego Rivera’s collection and the design of its interior. The museum presents the indigenous cosmos across three levels: the underworld is on the ground floor, the earthly world on the first floor, and the upper world on the top floor. The collection comprises nearly 60,000 pieces, including objects from western Mexico, Teotihuacan, and the Sierra of Oaxaca. The museum may update this figure over time.
The Museo Casa de León Trotsky offers a different historical perspective. The house has largely been preserved as it was during Trotsky’s life there. The reconstructed assassination room still contains the chair in the position it was in at the time, the papers on the table, and the library.
Historic Monument Zone, Plazas, and Historic Sites
The Historic Monument Zone of Coyoacán includes 50 buildings of historic value, built between the 16th and 19th centuries. Plaza Hidalgo is one of the zone’s open spaces. It hosts cultural events, including Día de Muertos altars, the Tamal Fair, and celebrations of the Independence Cry. Dates for individual events vary.
Religious buildings also offer different historical connections. Capilla San Antonio Panzacola belongs to the Franciscan order and was built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Capilla Santa Catalina de Siena contains two anonymous frescoes depicting the Franciscan and Dominican orders established in Coyoacán.
The Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones is located in San Diego Churubusco, in the borough of Coyoacán. It was established in the former Churubusco Monastery, a historically significant site of the 1847 battle against North American invaders. The museum is two blocks from General Anaya station on Metro Line 2. Check current Metro service conditions before traveling.
Green Space and Local Food Culture
Viveros de Coyoacán is a popular route for running and training. It can be reached via Viveros station on Line 3; here, too, it’s a good idea to check current service conditions before traveling. The Viveros nursery now includes just over 20 different forest tree species. Two specific aspects to keep in mind when planning are its use as a running and training route and the nursery’s work with various tree species.
Mercado de Coyoacán is known for tostadas with guisados and fried quesadillas. Vendors and dishes may change. If you’d like to explore the destination’s food culture, these two dishes offer a specific point of reference, but they don’t imply that every market stall has an extensive selection.
