Colima can be explored from a variety of cultural perspectives: the Pinacoteca Universitaria is dedicated to art, while the Museo Regional de Historia focuses on the history of the state. In the historic center, cobbled streets, shaded squares, and colonial-style buildings shape the cityscape. Coliman cuisine and Parque de La Piedra Lisa also add their own character to a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Colima, these themes can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.

Art at the Pinacoteca Universitaria

The Pinacoteca Universitaria has eleven museum galleries in the Casa de Don Pascual and the Casa del Piano, where temporary exhibitions are held. A polychrome stained-glass ceiling in the central hall of the Casa de Don Pascual depicts the erupting Volcán de Fuego. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to the painter Alfonso Michel; selected works include “La Barricada,” “Bañista,” “Retrato de Pita Amor,” and “Jarras.”

A 2017 institutional profile put the collection at more than 2,000 works spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, engraving, photography, and experimental techniques. The collection may have changed since then. The central hall also serves as a venue for recitals, literary activities, concerts, conferences, and other cultural activities. If you are planning to attend an event, check the current program before your trip.

Regional History at the Museum

The collection at the Museo Regional de Historia de Colima covers the history of the state from pre-Hispanic times through the first half of the 20th century. The museum is housed in a former Porfirian-era building, constructed as a residence in the early 19th century.

The galleries each have clearly defined themes: “Rito a la muerte – Tumba de tiro” features a reproduction of a shaft tomb. “El mar” explores Philippine influence and Far Eastern trade via the Manila Galleon. “El cielo” covers various religious orders, evangelization, and the adoption of San Felipe de Jesús as patron saint. The subjects thus range from a tomb reproduction and trade history to religious history.

Architecture and Cityscape

Colima’s historic center is characterized by cobbled streets, shaded squares, and colonial-style buildings. The Catedral Basílica Menor is considered an icon of religious architecture and is located in the historic center. Another architectural landmark is the Teatro Hidalgo, which has retained its original form since the mid-19th century.
