Palenque combines urban places in the center with religious traditions, handicrafts, and cultural events. The city itself is an important point of reference when looking for a hotel: it lies 6 km east of the archaeological zone and national park. Palenque has public services as well as accommodations, restaurants, shops, and markets; individual businesses and their availability may change. When planning your trip, you can take into account the city center, recurring cultural events, and the archaeological surroundings as distinct interests.

City Center and Archaeological Surroundings

The Museo de Sitio de Palenque Dr. Alberto Ruz Lhuillier offers a different perspective on Palenque. It is located in the Zona Arqueológica de Palenque, outside the city. Its collection preserves around 202 objects from various areas of Palenque. They offer insights into religious beliefs, ritual practices, and the political organization of the ancient city. The museum thus offers a look at Palenque’s archaeological history; the centrally located textile museum focuses on a different craft.

Church and Pedestrian Walkway in the Center

The Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán stands opposite the central park. Its traditional, simple architecture, white façade, and bell tower shape its outward appearance. The church is dedicated to Saint Dominic of Guzmán, the patron saint of the municipality. It serves year-round as a place for liturgical celebrations, Masses, weddings, baptisms, and festive events.

The Andador Turístico de la Hidalgo is a pedestrian walkway in the center, just a few steps from the central park and the church. Along the walkway are cafés, restaurants, handicraft shops, bars, and small stores that reflect local life and culture. Individual businesses may change. The walkway offers another view of the urban surroundings, while the church and central park remain distinct points of reference in the center.

Patronal Fair and Cultural Events

The Feria de Santo Domingo de Guzmán is Palenque’s annual patronal fair. Its tradition was formalized in 1877 by a decree issued by the then governor, Sebastián Escobar. As part of the fair, the Mañanitas a Santo Domingo de Guzmán are usually held in the early morning from August 1 to 4. Starting at 05:30, worshippers gather in the atrium of the Iglesia Santo Domingo de Guzmán to honor the saint with traditional mañanitas and music.

The Festival Mundo Maya Palenque is another annual cultural and tourism event in the city. It traditionally takes place during Semana Santa; the specific festival dates may vary. The two traditions have different cultural emphases: the mañanitas are part of the patronal fair for Santo Domingo de Guzmán, while the festival brings together culture and tourism. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.

Textile Making and Maya Handicrafts

The Museo del Textil Lak Puj Kul is located at Plaza Central in the center of Palenque. It showcases textile making by artisans from Chiapas. Another local craft includes stone replicas of famous Maya stelae, panels, and carved heads: artisans in Palenque make them from the same limestone used by the ancient Maya. Thus, two distinct craft themes sit side by side: textile making and the reproduction of Maya stone forms. Depending on your interests, there is a clear distinction between seeing a production process at the textile museum and viewing locally made limestone replicas.
