Rosarito Beach Municipality: Surfing and Lobster Tradition
Accommodation in Rosarito Beach Municipality
Playas de Rosarito combines Puerto Nuevo’s lobster tradition with year-round surfing, diving at an artificial reef and sweeping coastal views. You can tailor your trip to suit different interests: regional cuisine, time on the water or a view from Cerro El Coronel each offers its own highlights.
Puerto Nuevo: Lobster Tradition and Village Character
Puerto Nuevo is a lobster village with dozens of restaurants. Cobblestone streets, handicrafts and cafés also shape the town and complement its culinary side. Puerto Nuevo was founded in 1956 and is internationally known for a lobster tradition that dates back to the 1950s. Puerto Nuevo lobster is served with rice, beans, molcajete salsa, melted butter and large Sonora-style flour tortillas. The side dishes and preparation give the dish a distinct regional character.
Surfing and Water Sports
There are waves for surfing in Playas de Rosarito 365 days a year, as well as suitable spots for beginners and advanced surfers. Surfing at Muelle de Rosarito is recommended for beginners and intermediate-level surfers. This provides guidance ranging from a general selection for different experience levels to a specific recommendation for beginners and intermediate-level surfers. Escuela de Surf Locales is set up to give surf lessons to children and adults; check course availability before your trip. Kitesurfing in Rosarito makes use of excellent wind conditions to glide over the waves. Stand-up paddleboard tours along the beach are also available, as are equipment rentals and lessons. Availability and conditions for water sports may change.
Reef, Diving and Sport Fishing
Parque Submarino Rosarito was created in 2015 with the sinking of the patrol submarine Uribe 121. When diving in Playas de Rosarito, you can explore the North Pacific’s first artificial reef, URIBE 121. This gives the underwater experience a specific historical connection, too. As diving access and operators may change, it is advisable to check before making plans. Sport fishing is available in the fishing village of Popotla and in other areas. Seasons and operators may change here, too.
Coastal Views and Getting Around
From Cerro El Coronel, at 735 m above sea level, you can enjoy panoramic views across the entire coast. Views and trail conditions may vary, so check the current situation before your visit. Carretera Escénica connects Tijuana, Rosarito and Ensenada and is recommended for its sea views. The two perspectives are different: from Cerro El Coronel, the view extends across the entire coast, while sea views are also a feature of the road route. Road conditions may change, so it is a good idea to check before setting out.
