Discover Peñuelas
Accommodation in Peñuelas
The history of Peñuelas can be traced through the Antigua Hacienda de Peñuelas complex and the Templo de la Purísima Concepción. The Camino Real de Tierra Adentro also runs directly through the hacienda complex. This combination of architectural history and historic route gives Peñuelas a distinct cultural identity. To help plan your trip, you can also take into account the access road from Federal Highway 45 and the visiting arrangements for the inhabited hacienda.
Hacienda history and the Camino Real
The Hacienda de Peñuelas was established in 1612. In the 18th century, it began raising fighting bulls. At the same time, it supplied mining centers in northern New Spain with meat, milk, corn, beans, wheat, barley, and dried chilies. Livestock raising and agricultural production are therefore part of its history, along with its surviving buildings. The supplies included a variety of staple foods and reached beyond the immediate area.
The route of the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro is also part of the complex’s character: the historic route runs directly through it. The hacienda and the route can therefore be viewed as two connected aspects of Peñuelas’ history. Those interested in historic transport routes will find a tangible link here between a single hacienda and a regional route, without this implying a present-day travel itinerary.
Temple, courtyards, and different building phases
The Templo de la Purísima Concepción was built between 1847 and 1852 and is one of the first neoclassical temples in the state of Aguascalientes. The hacienda house of the Antigua Hacienda de Peñuelas is attached directly to the temple. It has a small rectangular courtyard with stone arcades. The Casa Grande also has several courtyards. These features show the role courtyards play in the complex’s architecture.
The hacienda’s central complex is one of the best-preserved haciendas in the region. Due to renovations, it features architectural elements from both the Porfirian era and the Art Nouveau period. The different stylistic features make its architectural history layered: the site cannot be reduced to a founding date or a single building phase. Inside the church, remains of its original structure have been preserved, including paintings, balustrades, the choir, and the pulpit.
The complex also includes the former residential quarters of the workers. Old posters for bullfights involving Peñuelas-bred bulls hang in the courtyard corridors; preserved heads of fighting bulls are also displayed there. As the current display should be confirmed before your visit, it is best to check in advance whether these exhibits are on view.
Visiting and getting there
The hacienda is inhabited. A special permit from the owners is required to visit its grounds, and the arrangements may change. Be sure to confirm the permit before your visit. This restriction applies to visits to the hacienda grounds and should be taken into account when planning.
Getting there: The Hacienda de Peñuelas is accessible from Federal Highway 45 via a short access road. This information can help you locate the site on your journey; it does not provide information about current traffic or road conditions. Plan your visit to the grounds separately from your journey there, as access to the road does not replace the required permit.
Surroundings and the focus of your trip
In an area of the former hacienda near Peñuelas are the Presa San Nicolás reservoir, mesquite forest, and natural grassland. Alongside the historic buildings, the natural features of the nearby surroundings are also worth noting. This information refers to that nearby area; it does not describe additional parts of the hacienda grounds.
When choosing a hotel, you can consider Peñuelas in light of the focus of your trip: the hacienda complex centers on the temple, courtyards, historic use, and the course of the Camino Real. The nearby area adds a landscape dimension to this cultural perspective, with its reservoir, forest, and grassland. This can help you decide which aspect of the destination matters most for your stay, without conflating the different places and topics.
