Retalhuleu between Archaeology and Theme Parks
Accommodation in Retalhuleu
Retalhuleu offers very different points of interest for your trip: Tak’alik Ab’aj is known for its archaeological evidence and a unique connection between landscape and design. By contrast, water routes, rides, and themed areas shape the experience at the theme parks. You can explore these highlights separately and plan your trip around your interests.
Tak’alik Ab’aj: Terraces, Sculptures, and History
The Tak’alik Ab’aj National Archaeological Park is located in the municipality of El Asintal in the Department of Retalhuleu. Its architecture and urban layout adapt to the natural terraces. The design combines cosmological principles with astronomical orientation. Here, then, landscape and design go together: the terraces shape the spatial setting, while the orientation reveals another dimension of the site.
The diverse sculptures document the cultural transition from the Olmec to the early Maya culture. Some monuments date from the Middle Preclassic Olmec culture and were moved to Tak’alik Ab’aj from their original location. The central Estela 5 depicts two upright figures in profile, facing one another. The sculptures thus offer different perspectives on the site: they tell of cultural change, while individual monuments depict very specific motifs.
Tak’alik Ab’aj also has lasting cultural significance within the broader travel destination of Guatemala. Indigenous groups belonging to 22 different Maya-language communities continue to regard the site as sacred and visit it for rituals. This context adds the site’s enduring spiritual significance to the story told by its architecture and monuments.
Water Attractions at Xocomil
At Xocomil Water Park in San Martín Zapotitlán, Department of Retalhuleu, the gentle Tumalá River passes through Pueblito Maya, Cañón Maya, and an event area. Its course connects several named areas within the park. Other water attractions described include Nido de serpientes, with seven slides. The Xibalbá slides consist of two free-fall rapids. The focus here, then, is on different kinds of water experiences: a river running through several areas, a group of slides, and two rapids.
Xejuyup’s Different Areas
Xejuyup Adventure Park comprises three main areas: Plaza Guayacán, Plaza El Huerto, and Plaza Granada. Its simultaneous visitor capacity is 5,000 people. Each attraction offers a different experience: El Castillo Enredado is a mechanical ride with a water route, while El Chapoteadero is an area with a slide, swimming pool, and interactive water fountains.
Specific themes take center stage beyond these water attractions as well. Trepe-Monos is a large cube with a rope course; El Rugido del Jaguar is a roller coaster. La Laguna de Coco is intended for fishing, and La Granja del Peregrino is an interactive farm. La Vereda, meanwhile, is a wooded area for horseback riding. This comparison illustrates the range of named areas: Xejuyup brings together water attractions, rides, a rope course, fishing, an interactive farm, and horseback riding.
Model Trains at Xetulul
Xetulul in San Martín Zapotitlán offers a different theme: Plaza Francia is home to Museo Trenópolis, which features model trains. The focus on model trains sets it apart from the water attractions at Xocomil and the various themed areas at Xejuyup. Alongside the archaeological evidence at Tak’alik Ab’aj, this gives you several distinct themes for your trip, ranging from cultural history to purpose-designed park attractions.
