Puerto Barrios: Garífuna Cuisine, Parks and Boat Connections
Accommodation in Puerto Barrios
Experience Puerto Barrios from different perspectives: through cuisine shaped by Garífuna culture, waterfront parks and boat connections across the bay. The municipality also offers destinations with their own distinctive landscapes. When planning your trip, it makes a difference whether you mainly want to explore the town itself or also plan boat trips and destinations within the municipality.
Cuisine with Garífuna influences
Puerto Barrios cuisine includes numerous seafood dishes, including soups, ceviches and stews. It is strongly influenced by Garífuna culture. These dishes include tapado, seafood soup, rice and beans (rice with beans cooked in coconut), banana bread, coconut bread and casabe. If you are interested in the culinary side of the destination, you will find more than just a single dish: seafood and Garífuna culture shape the cuisine more broadly.
Parks and activities
Parque Tecún Umán has a waterfront promenade and is set in a natural landscape with its pier and Bahía de Amatique. A 2018 municipal description highlights different uses of Parque Reyna Barrios: it reports sports activities every weekend on the basketball and futsal courts, as well as artistic and cultural events at the Concha Acústica. The parks therefore offer different attractions: a waterfront promenade and bay at one, sports and events at the other.
