Guatemala City brings together a history of its founding, museums with varied focuses, and public squares where buildings and events can be located. The present-day city was founded in 1776. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these points of interest: some offer a glimpse into the city’s history, others focus on Guatemala’s clothing traditions, while paths and green spaces provide a different perspective on the urban landscape. This can help you narrow down your interests for your time in the city before looking for a hotel.

Museums: City History and Clothing Traditions

The history of the Museo Nacional de Arqueología y Etnología is connected with two locations. It was first established in 1931 in the former El Calvario church. Later that same year, it was moved to the grounds of Finca «La Aurora» in Zone 13 of Guatemala City, where it opened in June. The former location and the grounds of the finca thus represent different stages in its history.

The Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena offers another cultural perspective. It explores clothing traditions from across Guatemala. Its collection includes ceramics, textiles, jewelry and books. Its focus on clothing and textiles sits alongside a diverse selection of collection types. The museum therefore offers a thematic approach to clothing traditions, while its collection is not limited to a single material group.

Plaza de la Constitución and Its Surroundings

Plaza de la Constitución, also called Parque Central, is on Sexta avenida in Zone 1. Its location can be understood through the landmarks around it: to the north is the Palacio Nacional, the former seat of government; to the east, the Catedral Metropolitana; to the south, the Portal del Comercio; and to the west, Parque Centenario and the Biblioteca Nacional de Guatemala. These cardinal directions provide a clear frame of reference for the buildings and public places around the square.

Events held at Plaza de la Constitución include celebrations and parades for Guatemalan Independence Day, concerts and speeches. If you are traveling for an event, check the specific dates for your travel period. This lets you plan around a particular date without assuming that the different types of events follow a fixed schedule.

Parks, Paths and a Traditional Fair

Cerrito del Carmen became a public park during the government of Jorge Ubico. It has several paths, gardens and benches, and offers views of the city. In contrast to Plaza de la Constitución, the focus here is on parkland and the view, while the square can be understood through its surrounding buildings and events. The two places therefore appeal to different interests: taking in the cityscape or enjoying a park with paths and gardens.

Parque Jocotenango, also known as Plaza de Jocotenango, is in Zone 2 and has green spaces. There are stalls selling traditional foods nearby. Since 1881, the traditional Feria de Jocotenango, or Ferias Angostinas, has been celebrated there in honor of the Virgen de la Asunción. The park’s green spaces and the fair’s long-standing tradition offer two different points of interest: the green spaces are part of the park, while the fair may be relevant to your travel calendar. If you are planning your trip around the fair, check the specific dates for your travel period.

When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which of these cultural interests you want to shape your trip. The museums offer different themes and collection focuses; Plaza de la Constitución combines its location among named landmarks with events, while the parks bring paths, green spaces or city views into the picture. This focus can help you tailor your search for hotels in Guatemala City to your travel interests.
