Anse-Bertrand brings together nature watching, coastal scenery and historic heritage. At the Ravine Sable pond, birdwatching takes center stage; at Porte d’Enfer and the Belvédère de Massioux, the Atlantic and sugar cane fields create contrasting landscapes. Hiking options range from a relatively short trail to the top of a cliff to a round trip of about three hours. The area also includes Saint-Denis Church and 17 mills within the commune.

Birdwatching at Ravine Sable

The Anse-Bertrand birdwatching center is located at Ravine Sable, on the shore of a pond, and was established to observe birds in their natural habitat. Along the path, Guadeloupe National Park has installed information panels and observation shelters. They allow visitors to learn about bird behavior without disturbing the animals. This makes the site a nature-focused attraction distinct from the coastal and landscape themes.

Rock formation and expansive landscape views

Porte d’Enfer is a striking rock formation overlooking the Atlantic. The area is named after the strong currents that pass through it. The Belvédère de Massioux offers a different landscape: from there, a 180-degree view stretches across vast sugar cane fields. The two sites thus offer contrasting scenery: a rock formation and the Atlantic on one hand, and expansive views over sugar cane fields on the other.

Hikes of varying lengths

A relatively short hiking trail leads to the top of the cliff at La Grande Vigie. The Trace des Douaniers offers a different time commitment: it is an easy, rocky hike marked in blue and yellow, from Plage de la Porte d’Enfer to Pointe du Souffleur. The round trip covers 8 km and takes about three hours. This gives you a choice between a relatively short trail to the cliff top and a round-trip hike of around three hours. As trail conditions can change, check the latest conditions before setting out.

In the wider surrounding area, an easy hike leads from Anse-Bertrand to Port-Louis; a beach walk passes through the mangrove, with its brackish-water plants, small fish, crabs and various birds. This mangrove landscape adds another nature-focused attraction alongside the cliff and coastal trails.

Saint-Denis Church and mill heritage

Saint-Denis Church was inaugurated on October 9, 2014, following construction work, on the feast day of its patron saint, Saint-Denis. There are 17 mills within the commune of Anse-Bertrand; the best-known is the Beaufond Mill. The church provides a precisely dated historical landmark, while the mills offer a broader look at the commune’s milling heritage.
