Port-Louis brings together a coastline lined with coconut palms and sea grape trees, the wetlands of the Marais de Port-Louis, and cultural and historical sights. This offers several ways to plan your trip: the beach, the landscapes of the Marais, and the history of sugar cane. If you’re looking for hotels in Port-Louis, you can start by considering which of these aspects of the area you’d like to shape your stay.

Coast, reef plateau and Marais

At Plage du Souffleur in Port-Louis, coconut palms and sea grape trees line the beach. Both tree species shape the coastal scenery and give travellers a clear point of reference when choosing between different landscape experiences. The northeastern reef plateau of Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin extends inland, forming mangroves, ponds, mudflats, wet meadows and dry forest in the Marais de Port-Louis.

The landscape continues inland from the reef plateau, so the Marais offers more than a single coastal view. At the beach, the trees along the shore take centre stage; in the Marais, it is the range of different landscapes. For travellers choosing based on natural scenery, these are two clearly distinct highlights: a specific coastal setting and a wetland with several different landscape types.

Beauport and the history of sugar cane

Beauport, Maison de la Canne, was a former sugar factory that has been converted into an interpretation centre. It presents the history of sugar cane and the workers. Its former use as a factory and the topics presented there give Beauport two perspectives: the site’s history is as relevant as the history of sugar cane and its workers.

The windmill at Habitation Godet is also one of Port-Louis’s tourist attractions. It adds a different point of interest to the topics presented at Beauport. If you’re organising your destinations by interest, you can choose between the history of sugar cane and its workers and another attraction.

Loop trail or coastal leg?

A marked loop trail leads into the heart of the Marais de Port-Louis, which can be explored on a peaceful walk. The circular route and its destination in the Marais give this option its own character. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

A different type of route is the Boucle du Nord Grande-Terre: its first leg runs from Beauport in Port-Louis along the coast of Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin to Anse Laborde in Anse-Bertrand. Beauport is therefore both the site of the interpretation centre and the starting point for this leg. The routes differ in their format and landscapes: a marked loop trail in the Marais, or a coastal leg starting at Beauport and ending at Anse Laborde. Check current trail conditions before setting out on this leg, too.
