Deshaies: Coastal Trail, Grande-Anse and Botanical Diversity
Accommodation in Deshaies
Deshaies offers several specific starting points for planning your trip: Grande-Anse, the Gros Morne ridge, the Jardin Botanique de Deshaies, cultural history and the Littoral de Deshaies coastal trail. If you are looking for a hotel in Deshaies, you can first consider which of these themes will be the deciding factor in choosing your destination. They each offer a different focus: beach scenery, plant diversity, walking, art and plantation history. You can then compare specific hotel offers based on your personal travel plans.
Scenery: Grande-Anse and Gros Morne
Grande-Anse is known for its coastal views of turquoise water and coconut palms. Gros Morne separates this beach from the town center, reaches a height of 206 meters and offers a steep walk through wooded undergrowth. These details distinguish two nature themes for trip planning: beach scenery and a walk along a wooded ridge.
Botanical diversity at the Jardin Botanique
The Jardin Botanique de Deshaies is a seven-hectare park that was formerly owned by Coluche. It showcases more than 1,000 species of tropical flowers and plants. Examples include bougainvillea, hibiscus and porcelain roses, as well as kapok trees, baobabs, mapou trees, sausage trees, breadfruit trees and double royal palms. The talipot is considered unique to Guadeloupe. The area and number of species offer two different measures: a seven-hectare park and more than 1,000 tropical species. The botanical diversity therefore encompasses both flowers and a range of tropical trees. Coluche's former ownership adds a historical connection to this nature theme.
Art and plantation history
In front of the town library stands L’Observateur de Menez, a sculpture by Jean Yves MENEZ. It combines the rock of Deshaies with an African mask created by a Breton. Habitation Guyonneau comprises the remains of the Grande Anse sugar plantation; these include an aqueduct arch that supplied water to the waterwheel of the sugarcane mill. The arch thus points to its technical function within the sugar plantation. The sculpture and plantation remains offer different cultural perspectives: an artistic combination of motifs and a structural feature with a specific function.
Coastal trail and commune
The Littoral de Deshaies coastal trail leads to Pointe Le Breton. From there, the route follows a coastal road toward Rifflet, continues behind the beach to Plage de La Perle and then goes on to the parking lot. The difference compared with Gros Morne is clear: there, a steep walk through undergrowth; here, a route with several named sections. Before setting out, check current local information about the route. The commune of Deshaies includes the Îlets Kahouanne, covering 20 hectares, and Tête à l’Anglais, covering 1.5 hectares. Kahouanne is considerably larger than Tête à l’Anglais. This extends the view beyond individual places and routes to the commune as a whole.
