San Fernando combines a distinctive local history with a natural highlight within the municipality. The history of the temple and the veneration of the Señor de la Misericordia offer insight into the religious tradition; at Laguna de Busa and nearby Cerro San Pablo, water activities and forest trails take center stage. When planning your trip, both religious events and a range of nature experiences are therefore relevant.

Church and Religious History

In the 19th century, an earthquake destroyed the church of San Fernando. The community then built a new temple at its present location opposite the central park. Its location opposite the park provides a clear landmark for understanding the historical context of the rebuilding. In 1953, the parish priest of San Fernando, Emiliano Crespo Revilla, renamed the image “Señor de la Misericordia” and established the veneration of the Señor de las Misericordia. In this way, architectural history and religious tradition are linked, even though they took place at different times. This distinction is important for understanding the chronology: the rebuilding dates to the 19th century, while the renaming and establishment of the veneration took place in 1953.

Celebrations Throughout the Year

Celebrations in honor of the Señor de la Misericordia take place on the first five Sundays of the year. The religious occasion is therefore not limited to a single Sunday, but extends across the first weeks of the year. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebrations, this period gives you a specific timeframe to consider. Check the dates for the relevant year before making your plans around them.

Laguna de Busa and Cerro San Pablo

Within the municipality of San Fernando, Laguna de Busa is considered a tourist landmark of the San Fernando canton in Azuay Province. Activities at the lagoon include horseback riding, sport fishing, walks along trails and camping. If one of these activities is essential to your visit, check its current availability in advance. Trips on the water are also an option: boat rides on the lake last 15 minutes; in a rented pedal boat, you can cross the lagoon while observing waterbirds that spend extended periods there. The two rides differ in focus: the boat ride has a set duration, while the pedal boat combines crossing the lagoon with birdwatching.

Cerro San Pablo lies directly next to Laguna de Busa. Trails let you walk through the forest surrounding the mountain landscape beneath densely leafy trees. This adds a different perspective on nature to the activities at the lagoon: forest trails instead of a trip on the water. If these trails are important to your visit, it is a good idea to check current conditions in advance.
