Hiking trails in the broader Saint Andrew Parish destination
For hiking, the broader Saint Andrew Parish destination offers several sections of the Waitukubuli National Trail, varying in length and difficulty. Section 7 runs for about 8.9 kilometres from Hatten Garden into the heights of Marigot and is rated moderate to difficult. Along the way, the landscape is shaped by farmland, primary forest and rivers; there are also coastal views. Congorie Hole is also part of this section.
At Walter Williams Orchard, the grounds serve as a parrot habitat and offer opportunities for birdwatching. There is also a birdwatching tower there; check its condition before visiting. The combination of forest, rivers and farmland gives this section a landscape character distinct from the coastal and dry forest areas of other trails in the parish.
At 13.5 kilometres, Section 12 is the longer of the two routes between Bourne and Penville. The moderate-to-difficult hike takes about seven hours and passes through a landscape of rugged Atlantic coastline, dry forest, farmland and local agriculture. Section 13 runs 6.8 kilometres from Penville to Capuchin and is rated moderate. It is therefore about half the length of Section 12. Its features include Tafia Falls and diverse wildlife and plant life, including birds, frogs, flowering plants, insects and tall trees. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Vieille Case: Name and history
Section 12 passes through Vieille Case, also known as Itassi Village. Itassi is the Kalinago name for the Vieille Case area. The villages of Vieille Case and Penville have historical ties to France. In Vieille Case, the church was built by the French in the early 17th century. This information about the place and its history is part of the broader Saint Andrew Parish destination and adds a cultural dimension to the hiking landscape.
Coastal scenery and activities in Calibishie
Calibishie is also part of the broader Saint Andrew Parish destination, but offers a different landscape: steep cliffs, red rocks, rivers flowing down from the mountains and palm-fringed beaches. The village is located on Dominica’s only barrier reef. Activities mentioned there include hiking, cycling, snorkelling and diving. Batibou Beach is on the Hampstead Estate, a former lime plantation. In the regional context, coastal scenery and water activities sit alongside the forest, agricultural and river landscapes of the trail sections described.
