Discover Limón: Nature, Coast and Culture
Accommodation in Limón
In Limón, nature experiences in protected areas and cultural sites shape the range of travel options. You can combine trails through forest landscapes, wildlife watching and insights into the province’s history. When planning, first consider which experiences matter most to you; this will also help you choose accommodation that suits your plans.
Nature between protected areas and the coast
Parque Nacional Tortuguero protects the most important nesting beach for the green sea turtle in the Western Hemisphere. It can only be reached by small boats. In the park, the 4.3-kilometre Sendero Río Tortuguero trail passes through an area where visitors can observe waterbirds, amphibians and reptiles. During nesting season, there is also a sea turtle watching program. Since this activity is seasonal, it is best to check the dates before your trip.
Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Gandoca-Manzanillo protects a range of ecosystems: yellow-sand beaches, wetlands with swamps and lagoons, flooded forests, reefs, seagrass beds and algal communities. It also preserves nesting habitat for four endangered sea turtle species: leatherback, loggerhead, green sea turtle and hawksbill. Reserva Biológica Hitoy-Cerere is home to more than 40 mammal species and more than 300 bird species; these population figures may change with future surveys.
Parque Internacional La Amistad also extends into Limón Province. The park includes tropical rainforest, cloud forest and a wide variety of habitats and species; trails and natural viewpoints offer ways to experience its landscapes. Refugio Nacional de Vida Silvestre Barra del Colorado is a mixed wildlife refuge. Conservation goals are pursued there together with resident communities; the area is well suited to community-based rural tourism.
Wildlife watching, hiking and snorkeling
Cerro Tortuguero offers panoramic views of the forest and Tortuguero’s canal system. A raised path provides safe access and leads from the foot of the hill to the summit. Together with the Sendero Río Tortuguero, it offers different ways to experience the landscape on foot: a trail of a set length with opportunities to observe wildlife, or the raised path up to the viewpoint.
In the marine area of Parque Nacional Cahuita, visitors can snorkel and explore the coral reef’s biodiversity. The park offers white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and diverse marine life. Those especially interested in the reef will find a different focus here than on a hike through forest or wetlands.
Cultural history and cacao
Museo Regional de la Provincia de Limón is housed in a heritage-listed building constructed in the early 20th century, during the boom in railway and banana production in Costa Rica. The museum focuses primarily on ethnohistory and presents the cultural heritage of Afro-Limonian, Indigenous, Chinese and mestizo communities. A space for temporary exhibitions and a multipurpose room complete the facilities. Museo Etnohistórico in central Limón was declared national cultural heritage in 1981.
In Cahuita, Museo del Cacao traces the history of the cacao fruit and the region where it was produced. Visitors can sample cacao made there. This combines learning about cacao’s history with a tasting. For a more in-depth experience, the chocolate tour by G&E Chocolate Adventure Company offers insights into processing cacao fruit into chocolate. Tastings include fresh, dried and roasted cacao, cocoa butter and cocoa powder, roasted and caramelized cacao beans, and sweet chocolate with seasonal fruits.
Rural experiences and choosing accommodation
Rancho Pontevedra is an agroecological and tourist farm in Limón Province. It offers guided hikes and tours of crops such as coffee, cacao, pineapple, plantains and passion fruit; there are also activities involving farm animals. This complements excursions to protected areas with an insight into the cultivation of different crops.
This way, your choice of base depends on your travel plans, not just the name of the province.
