The town centre of Saint-Basile developed on the north bank of the Portneuf River, at the confluence of the Chaude and Sept Îles rivers. Nature trails, winter activities and architectural heritage give the town a variety of highlights. When planning your trip, it’s worth first considering whether you’d mainly like to spend time outdoors, take in a cultural event or plan a seasonal activity.

Trails and outdoor activities

The Centre Nature Saint-Basile trail network covers 30 kilometres. It offers opportunities for fat biking, mountain biking, walking and snowshoeing. This means there are different ways to get out on the trails. If you’re planning your stay around outdoor activities, you can start with the one that interests you most.

Snowmobile trails are another option: the Grand Portneuf Snowmobile Club maintains several kilometres of them in the Saint-Basile area. The local trails are part of a network spanning more than 1,000 kilometres across Portneuf, with marked and maintained trails. The figures therefore describe two different scales: several kilometres in the Saint-Basile area and a much larger network across Portneuf.

The Fête de la pêche also combines time outdoors with an activity for children. It takes place on the bank of the rivière Chaude near the Centre Nature. The river is stocked for the event so children can try fishing.

Winter and seasonal events

Patin Disco takes place every winter in Saint-Basile. The program includes skating accompanied by music, games, a campfire, a prize draw and hot chocolate. If you’d like to plan your trip around this event, take its date into account when making your plans.

Free family movie nights are held several times a year at the Centre Ernest-J.-Papillon. This is another specific activity for families, while Patin Disco brings together winter activities on the ice. The two events therefore differ in both season and format.

For a seasonal activity, Plantation René Matte offers a choose-and-cut Christmas tree experience. The plantation covers 28 arpents. If you’d like to include tree cutting in your travel plans, check the current dates in advance.

Church and heritage

The Église de Saint-Basile was built between 1882 and 1888 to designs by architects David Ouellet and François-Xavier Berlinguet. It is a Neo-Romanesque religious building. It is considered to have significant cultural and historical value because of its use, age, authenticity, architectural style and context. Its construction dates, architects and style offer specific points of interest if you’re interested in the town’s history and architecture.

The Moulin François-Xavier Piché, at 171 boulevard du Centenaire, is also part of Saint-Basile’s built heritage. For the Journées de la culture, the recreation department, the Au fil des mots library and the Société d’histoire de Saint-Basile work together. The program for residents includes talks, photography and sculpture exhibitions, historical films and arts activities.

When looking for a hotel in Saint-Basile, consider what you’d like to focus on during your trip: the trail network, winter activities, the seasonal choose-and-cut experience or the town’s heritage. If you’re planning your stay around an event or tree cutting, coordinate your plans with the relevant date.
