Fatima: Mi-Carême and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Fatima
Explore Fatima for your trip through two specific themes: Mi-Carême in March and the town’s history, centered on its church, parish, and houses. If you would like to take part in the celebration, plan around the dates, which vary each year; for architectural heritage, the parish’s development and characteristic house styles are useful starting points.
Mi-Carême: Dates and Tradition
Mi-Carême is an annual tradition in Fatima. An ethnological survey, documented in the field in 2008, describes hundreds of costumed participants visiting around fifty selected homes in small groups in March. The festival lasts three days, from Wednesday to Friday; tourists can also take part. The exact dates vary according to the liturgical calendar. For your trip, therefore, check the dates for the relevant year rather than assuming a fixed date in March. Traditional Acadian and Québécois music is central to Mi-Carême.
Traditional customs associated with Mi-Carême in Fatima include drinking bagosse, or “bière des îles”: artisanal alcoholic beverages made in Les Îles-De-La-Madeleine.
Church, Parish, and House Styles
Fatima developed around a church and the parish of the same name, founded in 1948. Notre-Dame-du-Rosaire de Fatima Church was built in 1967 and received a Grade C (“supérieure”) religious heritage designation. The founding of the parish and the construction of the church mark two distinct stages in the town’s history.
Most houses built in Fatima during this period of development follow a similar model and have comparable volumes; they are located within a radius of less than three kilometres from the church. Hipped roofs, gables, and front galleries are among their characteristic features. A hipped roof has sloping roof surfaces on all sides; a gable forms the upper end of a wall, while a front gallery is located at the front of the house.
Anse-aux-Baleiniers and the “Les Caps” Stage
The municipality’s 2021 recreation plan identifies Anse-aux-Baleiniers as Fatima’s only recreational tourism area. The official 2026–2027 tourism guide gives the address for the L’Anse-aux-Baleiniers recreational tourism offering as 146, chemin de l’Hôpital in Fatima, and lists June to September as its opening period. The seasons do not overlap: Mi-Carême takes place in March, while the offering is open from June to September.
The trail guide published in 2021 describes the “Les Caps” stage from L’Étang-du-Nord to Fatima as 16.5 kilometres long, taking four hours, and of moderate difficulty. It passes through the village of Fatima and ends at the Anse aux Baleiniers site. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out. The distance, duration, and difficulty provide different points of reference for planning your route.
