Art and culture give a trip to Joliette a clear focus; at Parc régional des Chutes Monte-à-Peine-et-des-Dalles, trails and seasonal activities add more options. You can tailor your plans to your interests: a broad art-historical perspective, a cultural program, creative time together or outdoor exercise.

Art, culture and venues

The Musée d'art de Joliette (MAJ) is one of Québec’s most prominent art museums. Its extensive collection offers an exceptional overview of art from the 14th century to the present day. The museum is a distinctive stop if you are interested in different eras on your trip.

Families can also enjoy a hands-on activity together at the MAJ: in the René Préville family education area, they can get creative, with tools and materials provided. The activity combines making art with a museum visit, without requiring you to choose a particular art theme.

The Centre culturel Desjardins was founded in 1979. It promotes cultural and artistic activities throughout the greater Joliette region and presents more than 200 events a year. While the MAJ’s collection spans a broad range of eras, the Centre focuses on an extensive program of events.

At the Amphithéâtre Fernand-Lindsay, 2,000 seats are in the covered area and 5,000 are on the lawn. These figures give you a clear idea of the venue’s capacity and distinguish between its two areas. Together with the museum and the Centre culturel, the Amphithéâtre shows how varied the cultural stops on your trip can be.

Hiking trails and winter activities

Parc régional des Chutes Monte-à-Peine-et-des-Dalles has more than 26 kilometres of marked hiking trails. In winter, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and fat biking are also available. You can choose between a trail network and several specifically winter activities, rather than limiting your visit to just one way of enjoying the outdoors.

Another option in the park is the 700-metre-long Mega zipline, which crosses the valley. It offers a different experience from hiking or the winter sports: rather than following a trail, you cross the valley. Check the seasonal winter activities and zipline availability before your trip.

Getting there and finding your way around

In the urban area of the MRC de Joliette, the MRC operates six bus routes serving Saint-Charles-Borromée and the cities of Notre-Dame-des-Prairies and Joliette. To travel by public transit from Montréal to the MAJ, go via Radisson metro station and take bus 50 from platform 5. There are several trips a day, taking 50 to 55 minutes. As current transit information can change, check the schedule before setting out.

Culinary stops offer their own highlights. Choco Chocolat is an artisanal chocolate shop and dairy bar in a historic building in downtown Joliette; tastings are available on site. Marché public du centre-ville de Joliette offers a wide selection of local products, including fresh fruit and vegetables, artisan bread and specialty foods. The market is seasonal, so check the current dates before visiting.
