Kempt Head: Farm Cuisine and Landscapes
In Kempt Head, two distinct points of interest come together for trip planning: GRÁ’s cuisine and the landscape around Seaweed and Sod Farm. The farm offers views of Bras d’Or Lake and is located roughly halfway between the Cabot Trail and the Fortress of Louisbourg. This approximate location provides a regional point of reference; the cuisine adds its own local touch. If you choose a destination for its culinary profile as well as its scenery, you’ll find both here as part of the local character.
GRÁ and Seaweed and Sod Farm
GRÁ is located at 8874 Kempt Head Road in Kempt Head. The sustainable farm restaurant is on a 150-acre farm beside Bras d’Or Lake. Guests can enjoy food prepared using traditional cooking techniques and grown just a few steps away. The menu changes daily based on what is harvested in the garden and surrounding area. This puts the harvest at the heart of the culinary concept. If you’re planning a visit to GRÁ, check its current opening days separately.
Seaweed and Sod Farm follows a separate schedule: it will not be operating in 2026; online reservations for 2027 are scheduled to open on January 1, 2027. The farm’s features include approximately 3 km of marked walking trails and access to two private beaches, which are reachable on foot. Since these amenities are part of the farm, check its operating status before visiting. This ensures that information about the trails and beaches remains tied to the farm’s actual status.
More Experiences in the Broader Destination of Victoria County
Victoria County offers a range of nature and cultural destinations as additional regional context. Cabots Landing provides access to a 3-kilometre beach trail. A commemorative stone at the Cabots Landing National Historic Site marks the landing of explorer John Cabot. A different landscape experience awaits on the 2.6-kilometre out-and-back hike to Uisge Bàn Falls: it leads through deciduous forest to a 15-metre waterfall in a granite gorge. The beach trail and forest hike thus offer two different ways to experience the landscape in the broader destination.
The park landscapes also offer distinct highlights. Bald eagles and various hawk species are often spotted along the cliff line of Cape Smokey Provincial Park. The park has a 10-kilometre trail with viewpoints along 275-metre-high granite cliffs. In contrast, Barra Forest-MacNeils Vale Provincial Park covers 733 hectares and includes a shoreline section of Bras d’Or Lake at Maskells Harbour. Cliffs, viewpoints, and lakeshore show different sides of Victoria County’s natural offerings.
The cultural attractions also have different focuses. The Great Hall of the Clans Museum uses eight interactive displays to present the traditions of Scottish Highland settlers and how they developed into a way of life in Cape Breton over more than 200 years. Baile nan Gàidheal | Highland Village is a living history museum and folklore centre dedicated to the history, language, and living culture of the Gaels in Nova Scotia. This lets you choose between an exhibition about the traditions of Highland settlers and a broader interpretation of Gael history, language, and culture.
