Arichat: Churches, Harbour and History
Accommodation in Arichat
Arichat can be explored through its architectural history and maritime themes. When planning a hotel stay, you can first decide whether you are more interested in architecture and local history or in the history of the harbour.
Churches and historic houses
Notre Dame de l’Assomption opened in 1837 and is the oldest surviving Roman Catholic church in Nova Scotia. Its architecture combines Neoclassical and Gothic Revival styles. Another striking blend of styles can be found in the Flynn-Cutler-Robichaud House, which combines Gothic and New England Colonial architecture. These two specific buildings offer a way to compare different architectural influences.
The Flynn-Cutler-Robichaud House also tells the story of its former use as an inn: it operated under the name Commercial House, and the hotel remained in operation until the late 1950s. Today, the building is a private residence. The name Commercial House is therefore part of the house’s history, not the name of a currently operating hotel.
The St. John’s Centre for the Arts is located in the former St. John’s Anglican Church. The building was constructed in 1895 and designed by William Critchlow Harris. LeBrun’s Store continues to shape the scene at Arichat Harbour: the building was rebuilt as a new three-storey structure. Along with the former church and historic houses, it adds a distinctive harbour landmark to the built features of local history.
Maritime history and the harbour
The site of the LeNoir Forge Museum includes a boathouse with exhibits and information on maritime history. The museum’s forge is also an important historic building: it was built between 1780 and 1800 and is one of the oldest stone buildings on Cape Breton Island. Here, two themes sit side by side: the history of craftsmanship and the region’s maritime past.
The Arichat Cup is a 16-mile harbour race for members of local yacht clubs. You can watch the competition from either side of Arichat Harbour. If you want to include the race in your plans, check the dates before travelling; no specific current date is given in the description.
You can arrange tours of the St. John’s Centre for the Arts by email through the Friends of St. John’s Arichat Society. In addition to the building’s construction date and architect, a tour can be considered as a separate planning point.
Richmond County: nature and history
Within the wider destination of Richmond County, Isle Madame is known as the “Isle of 1,000 coves.” Point Michaud Nature Reserve consists mostly of bogs and poorly drained forests dominated by black spruce. Rare wetland plants such as New Jersey rush grow in the bogs. These nature themes offer a distinct regional focus alongside Arichat’s church and harbour history.
Lennox Passage Provincial Park has two kilometres of hiking trails and two kilometres of shoreline; it also has an operational lighthouse. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are possible in winter. Park services and access may vary seasonally, so check these conditions before visiting. Another distinct historical feature in Richmond County is the St. Peters Canal, which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Bras d’Or Lakes. The canal is associated with a French trading post and settlement, as well as a British fort on a hill.
