Hantsport lies on the banks of the Avon River. The town offers several distinct options for a stay: a viewpoint overlooking the river, trails in parks and around Riverbank Cemetery, and insights into local industrial history. There are also music and winter events. For planning purposes, it is helpful to know that these offerings have different focuses.

Riverside scenery on the Avon River

Fundy Centennial Park has a viewpoint overlooking an arm of the Avon River that branches off from the Minas Basin. Together with Hantsport’s location on the banks of the Avon River, this view gives a specific sense of the local river landscape. If you would like to make the scenery a focus of your stay, the viewpoint is a clearly identified landmark.

Trails and recreation

The trails in Hantsport differ in their locations and routes. R.A. Jodrey Memorial Field has a trail along its edges. Riverbank Cemetery has a well-maintained walking trail, with gently winding paths around the cemetery. This offers two distinct options: a trail along the edge of a playing field and a loop around the cemetery.

Sports activities have their own rhythm: several games and baseball practices take place at Shamrock Ball Field, although use may vary by season. Many soccer games are also held at Fundy Centennial Park. If soccer games are important to your plans, check the current field schedule before your trip.

Local history and industrial heritage

Local history can be seen in several places. Dr. Silas Rand Park is named after Dr. Silas Rand, a Baptist missionary to the Mi’kmaq. In McDade Park, a bench stands at the original site of the Presbyterian Church, which was there from 1897 to 1980. Local history is thus reflected both in a park’s name and at the former site of a building.

The Dorie & Garnet McDade Heritage Centre offers another way to explore Hantsport’s industrial heritage. It preserves records and artifacts from the shipyards and other businesses that earned Hantsport the nickname “the town of industries.” The centre is operated by the Hantsport & Area Historical Society. Its collection connects the history of the shipyards and other businesses with a specific place in Hantsport.

Music and winter events

The Hantsport Music Fest spans a range of musical styles, from country and blues to classic rock and bluegrass. The Hantsport Winter Carnival centres on building a lit Hantsport igloo and features numerous weekend events for children and adults. If you are planning a trip around one of these events, check the current dates and program in advance.
