Colchester County: Coast, Trails and History
Accommodation in Colchester County
The Cobequid Trail is an 18-kilometre network of hiking and cycling trails in central Colchester County. From the trail, you can enjoy a view of the Salmon River and a salt marsh. If you enjoy walking or cycling, the trail combines outdoor activity with a distinct sense of the landscape.
Coastal Scenery, Trails and Tides
The Northumberland Strait’s warm waters run along the north coast of Colchester County. The Trans Canada Trail in the county includes the Butter Trail and the Short Line Trail along the Northumberland Shore. When planning, you can distinguish between the central Cobequid Trail and two named trail sections on the coast.
In Lower Five Islands, Five Islands Lighthouse Park is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Cliffs of Fundy. From there, panoramic views stretch across the Minas Basin and all Five Islands. The park also provides access to a long pebble beach. The views and the beach offer two different reasons to include this stretch of scenery in your travel plans.
At the Salmon River, a tidal bore occurs twice daily at predicted times as the tide comes in. You can watch the event from the Fundy Discovery Site; the predicted times are a helpful reference for planning. The site has bike racks, a repair station, washrooms, and maps and information about the area. The water station is available from May to October.
The Cobequid Trail is also near the Fundy Discovery Site. It’s suitable for leisurely walks, cycling, running and wildlife watching. This gives you a choice of different outdoor activities: watching the tidal bore on the river or getting active on a nearby trail.
Mills, Museums and Regional History
The Balmoral Grist Mill Museum is a three-storey mill in a wooded ravine on Matheson’s Brook. Right next door is Balmoral Mills, a park where visitors can picnic or go for a walk. The museum and park offer both a glimpse of the mill landscape and opportunities to spend time outdoors.
Willow Church Cemetery is one of the oldest known cemeteries on Nova Scotia’s North Shore, dating from the late 18th century. A cairn erected by the Nova Scotia Museum in 1971 commemorates the first church built in this area and funded by the Willow Church Community. The cemetery and cairn offer different historical points of interest.
Sutherland Steam Mill is a museum connected to Nova Scotia’s industrial heritage. In Truro, the Colchester Historeum has more than 10,000 artefacts; its archives include thousands of records from Colchester County. The museum also hosts community events on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and everyone is welcome. Check the event schedule before your visit.
