Antigonish brings together a long tradition of events, theatre, regional culture and opportunities for outdoor activities. The Antigonish Highland Games have been held since 1863; other attractions include the Antigonish Heritage Museum, a seasonal farmers’ market and a shared-use trail designed for walking, running and cycling.

Culture, Theatre and Events in Antigonish

The Antigonish Heritage Museum is a community museum. It is dedicated to preserving and promoting cultural understanding of the heritage of the Town of Antigonish and Antigonish County. Two main rooms feature exhibits on the region’s history and material culture. This brings both the cultural heritage of the town and the wider region into focus.

The Antigonish Highland Games are held in Antigonish and have been around since 1863. Their beginnings included a parade, bagpipe and drum music, Scottish dancing, athletic events and a gathering of Scots from around the world. This long tradition provides a different cultural point of reference from the theatre offerings: Festival Antigonish was founded in 1987 and is associated with the Bauer Theatre in Antigonish.

Theatre Antigonish is a community theatre supported by St. Francis Xavier University and the people of Antigonish since 1974. Its season runs from October to March at the Bauer Theatre next to the University Chapel. If theatre is important to your travel plans, check current dates before your trip. This helps distinguish seasonal performances from the town’s long-standing cultural and historical themes.

Market and Getting Around Town

The Antigonish Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from May to December. This makes a visit to the market a specific weekend stop to include in your travel plans; check the current schedule before you go.

The Antigonish Active Transportation Trail is a paved, shared-use trail designed for walking, running and cycling. Its construction status varies by section. If you plan to use the trail, check the condition of the section in question rather than assuming the entire trail is complete.

Antigonish County: Coast, Trails and Nature

The wider destination of Antigonish County includes the Northumberland Shore along the Sunrise Trail. On the North Shore of Antigonish County, coastal cliffs drop into the sea. Lookouts offer places to stop, with interpretive panels on the region’s history and culture. This adds a distinct perspective on the county’s landscape to Antigonish’s cultural themes, without attributing the coastal communities to the town itself.

The trails in the wider Antigonish County also vary in the landscapes they are described as passing through. The Antigonish Landing Trail runs through the Antigonish Harbour Wildlife Management Area. The Fairmont Ridge Hiking Trail offers six different loops over hilly terrain; the Fairmont Hiking Trail has 12 kilometres of well-marked trails. The Mahoneys Beach Trail follows the shoreline and offers opportunities to observe local wildlife. Keppoch Mountain also has numerous hiking trails.

Beaver Mountain offers views of Antigonish County and Cape Breton Island. The trail system is six kilometres long and includes paved trails as well as more challenging unpaved hills. The Arisaig area is known for its geology and fossils. A 1.5-kilometre hiking trail there runs through the forest and provides access to the shore; snowshoeing is also possible and may depend on conditions.

Eastern Antigonish County has gravel and sandy beaches, quiet harbours and tidal estuaries with waterfowl, shorebirds and other wildlife. The coast offers opportunities for swimming, beachcombing and birdwatching; conditions vary by season. Pomquet Beach combines wooden boardwalks with a gently sloping beach, and the boardwalks pass through the surrounding forests. Check seasonal offerings before your trip. Bayfield Beach Provincial Park is a good spot for a picnic.

Cultural Sites and Regional History

The wider Antigonish County also offers several ways to explore the region’s heritage. The Cape George Heritage School Museum displays artefacts and provides information about the region’s heritage and culture. The Ballantyne’s Cove Bluefin Tuna Interpretive Centre provides information about tuna and the history of tuna fishing. Interpretive panels are located at the Cape George Lighthouse; sites at Cape George also provide access to the Cape George Hiking Trails.

Historical sites in the county include St Anne’s Church in Summerside, built in 1867 as a mission church for the Mi’kmaq. Our Lady of Grace Monastery and Outdoor Shrine was founded in 1825 by Father Vincent de Paule Merle and several French Trappists, who named it Petit Clairvaux. These different stories complement the museum exhibits with specific places and dates.

For more activities, Linwood Heritage Nature Trail and Picnic Area offers opportunities for walking and picnicking. Small boats can also access Linwood Harbour from there; check local launching conditions. The Arisaig Lobster Dinner is held annually on Mother’s Day at the Arisaig Parish Community Centre in Arisaig. Check the date for the relevant year if you’d like to include the event in your trip.
