Discover Shediac
Accommodation in Shediac
The town offers a distinctive lobster landmark, trails for a range of activities, seasonal rentals on the inner bay, as well as cultural and market offerings. By organizing your priorities around your travel dates and personal interests, you can plan your stay with purpose.
Lobster and seasonal opening hours
The world's largest lobster is located in Shediac. At the Homarus Centre, an interpretive and interactive experience offers insights into lobsters and the Northumberland Strait ecosystem. Here, a distinctive local theme meets an in-depth exploration of its ecosystem.
The Homarus Centre is open daily from May to the end of August. After Labour Day, it is open on weekends only until Thanksgiving Sunday. Plan your visit around this seasonal schedule and check the hours before your trip.
Trails for different activities
More than 12 kilometres of walking and cycling trails have been developed in the Town of Shediac area. The trails in Shediac, developed by the Association Plein Air Shediac/Shediac Outdoors Association Inc. (APASOA), are multi-use trails for walking, hiking, trail running, snowshoeing, mountain biking and fat biking. The local trail network therefore offers activities on foot and on wheels, as well as snowshoeing and fat biking.
For trip planning, the two descriptions provide different points of reference: the figure of more than 12 kilometres refers to the developed walking and cycling trails in the Town area. The activity list describes the types of use for the trails developed by APASOA. If you want to explore Shediac on foot or by bike, you get both a specific distance and a broad picture of the activities available.
Water and birdwatching
In summer, Le Paddle rents stand-up paddleboards and boats for exploring Shediac's inner bay. The offerings include kayaks and motorized dinghies. This is a seasonal option, distinct from the year-round opportunity for birdwatching in Shediac. Bird sightings themselves are seasonal and variable.
There is a clear comparison to consider when choosing your travel dates: watercraft rentals are described as a summer offering, while birdwatching is possible year-round. Which birds can be observed varies with the season. This lets you distinguish between a time-limited water activity and a year-round opportunity for observation, without assuming that particular sightings are guaranteed.
Art, culture and local products
Le Hub Arts & Culture in the heart of Shediac showcases artists, creatives and cultural initiatives through exhibitions, events, workshops and special experiences for visitors and the community. The Hub therefore offers a range of cultural formats in one location.
Shediac's Artist Village and the Shediac Sunday Market also showcase local artisans. Market 37 in Shediac offers local products, fresh goods, specialties and products from businesses in the region. These provide different ways to connect with the area: cultural events and workshops, crafts, and regional goods. Individual vendors and products may change, so if you are looking for particular items, it's worth checking the current offerings.
Historical connections
Shediac hosted the first Congrès mondial acadien (Acadian World Congress). In addition, the second railway line built in the Maritimes was inaugurated in Shediac in 1857. These two facts offer different historical perspectives: the first congress is part of the town's history, while the railway inauguration connects to transportation history.
A regional perspective: Westmorland County
As a broader travel destination, Westmorland County offers its own geographic setting. The county borders the Northumberland Strait and the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy. Its marshlands were an important part of the traditional routes of the Mi’kmaq. These regional connections add a perspective on the county's landscape and history to Shediac-specific activities.
