Accommodation in Penobsquis
Penobsquis combines architectural history, ATV tours, and agricultural events as distinct reasons to visit. The broader destination of Kings County adds other cultural and natural attractions. This lets you choose between local highlights and regional destinations for your trip.
Architectural History in Penobsquis
The Brick House at Oak Lawn Farm is a two-storey residence at 12558 Route 114 in Penobsquis and is designated a historic site. It is associated with William Freeze, a stonemason who initially settled 640 acres of land. The property was part of that land. The house was built from the original bricks on the same foundation. Both its connection to Freeze and its architectural legacy are central to this historic site.
ATV Tours and Day-Trip Planning
The Sussex Valley Quad Trail includes seven one-day experience tours, each with a different destination. In Penobsquis, Trail 3409 starts on the grounds of the Timberland Motel/Animaland Campground. Free parking is available at The Timberland for day trips that do not require an overnight stay. As parking arrangements can change, check current parking availability before you travel.
Agricultural Events
Tait Heritage Farms in Penobsquis offers opportunities to experience agriculture through specially curated farm events. If you plan to include one of these events in your itinerary, check the dates in advance.
Culture and Nature in Kings County
In the broader destination of Kings County, the Intercolonial Railway Station offers a distinct cultural and historical highlight. It is designated a Local Historic Place because it played a formative role in the early development of the community of Sussex. The one-and-a-half-storey brick railway station is designed in the Craftsman style; a covered passage connects it to the freight building. Today, the station houses the 8th Canadian Hussars Museum.
The Kings County Museum and Old County Gaol offer another perspective. It presents rotating exhibitions on the history of Kings County and is located in the Centennial Building and the adjoining old Kings County Gaol. The two museum themes offer distinct historical focuses: the 8th Canadian Hussars at the station and the history of the county at the Kings County Museum.
The natural attractions across the broader Kings County also differ in focus. The Sussex Nature Walkway is a 5 km self-guided trail along Trout Creek that passes through an area with diverse flora and fauna. Hampton Marsh is part of the St. John River floodplain and lies within a network of oxbows, tributaries, and backwaters of the Kennebecasis River. It offers opportunities for birdwatching and photography, as well as recreational boating, canoeing, and kayaking. This contrasts a trail of a specified length with a wetland for nature observation and water activities.
The Quilt Barn Tour follows winding country roads through scenic Kings County to painted quilt blocks at farm markets, historic sites, and craft shops. Unlike a single house or museum, it combines the drive with a variety of destination types.
