Wasa looks out over Wasa Lake and Wasa Lake Park at the lake’s northern end. For planning purposes, you can distinguish the protected landscape, a self-guided nature walk, trails for hikers and cyclists, and activities on the water. Their distances, formats and conditions offer different ways to plan your stay.

Wasa Lake Park and Its Landscape

The 144-hectare Wasa Lake Park protects a representative area of fire-dependent temperate grasslands. This landscape, as well as the lake, is part of the area’s character. Wasa Lake is known for its warm summer water: the park and lake offer different perspectives on Wasa to consider when planning your stay.

The park was established in 1955 to provide recreational access to the warmest swimming lake destination in the Kootenays. This historical objective is part of the park’s history; it describes the purpose for which it was established at the time.

Walks and Cycling Routes

The self-guided Forest of the Rainshadow Interpretive Trail is in Wasa Lake Park. The loop is 2.7 kilometres long and is described as an approximately one-hour nature walk for the whole family. Its approximate duration and loop format give you a practical guide for a walk, without needing to plan a longer bike ride.

The Wasa Lions Way is a longer option: this paved route is 8 kilometres long and follows secondary roads around the lake. It can be used by hikers and cyclists. Compared with the 2.7-kilometre Interpretive Trail, the stated distance is considerably longer; the Lions Way is also specifically described as a route for both uses.

For a longer bike ride, the 33-kilometre Lazy Lake Bike Loop leads from Wasa Lake to Lazy Lake and back to Wasa Lake via Lazy Lake Road. Part of the route follows Wolf Creek Road. Its length and stated route therefore distinguish it from the trails directly around the lake.

Conditions on the Interpretive Trail may change seasonally. Surface or access conditions on the Wasa Lions Way, as well as road and trail conditions on the Lazy Lake Bike Loop, may also change. Take these notes into account when planning your route.

Activities on Wasa Lake

Water skiing and windsurfing are possible on the lake. Designated swimming areas and the weather affect water-skiing conditions; weather and lake conditions are factors for windsurfing. The lake’s warm summer water is a well-known feature of Wasa Lake, but it does not replace the need to consider current conditions.

In calm weather, the lake is suitable for canoeing. As motorboats also use the lake, watch for boat traffic while paddling. Different conditions therefore matter when choosing between canoeing, windsurfing and water skiing: calm weather is noted for canoeing, while weather and lake conditions should also be considered for windsurfing.
