Tofino brings together surf, trails and culture. If you’re looking for hotels in Tofino, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: beaches and surfing, outdoor trails, art and history, or a whale-watching tour. These activities offer different points of reference for planning.

Beaches and surfing in Tofino

Tofino has more than 35 kilometres of beaches, with year-round wave surfing for surfers of all skill levels. Cox Bay is one of the sandy beaches around Tofino known for its surf. Surf lessons are highly recommended for beginners or inexperienced surfers who are not yet familiar with Tofino’s surf spots. So when planning, surfing experience is not the only factor: whether you already know the local breaks also matters for this recommendation. The beaches and year-round surfing provide a broad coastal setting; Cox Bay is a specific example of one of the well-known sandy beaches.

Trails with different features

The Tonquin Trail is a moderately challenging gravel trail with beautiful views of Clayoquot Sound, and it winds through old-growth forest. This combination of trail type, difficulty and scenery describes its character. Another point of reference is Tofino’s 8.8-kilometre Multi-Use Path (MUP), which is used year-round by walkers, runners, cyclists, skateboarders and e-bikers. When comparing the two trails, different considerations come to the fore. For the Tonquin Trail, useful points of reference include its difficulty, gravel surface, forest and views; for the MUP, they are its stated length and the range of users.

Discover history and art

The Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum is located in downtown Tofino (Načiks). It presents events ranging from the last Ice Age and Nuu-chah-nulth culture to the logging protests that shaped the present day. Its thematic scope therefore extends from events in the distant past to more recent developments. If you’re interested in the region’s history and culture, the museum offers a clearly defined area of focus for your Tofino trip.

The self-guided Tofino Art Walks offer a different cultural perspective. They allow visitors to discover multimedia works throughout Tofino. There are two routes to choose from: Downtown and MUP (Multi-Use Pathway). While the museum presents historical and cultural topics at its downtown location, the Art Walks’ works are spread throughout Tofino. The two offerings differ in both focus and format: museum topics on the one hand, and self-guided art walks featuring multimedia works on the other.

Fit whale watching into your day

A whale-watching tour in Tofino typically lasts 2.5 to 3 hours. Whales are sighted on a typical tour; sea otters and sea lions may also be seen. The usual duration is a specific point of reference when planning your day. Unlike trails, which are described primarily by their features, length or user groups, whale watching can be planned around a typical time frame. This lets you treat the tour as a separate activity while choosing between wildlife viewing, outdoor activities and culture.

Surfing, trails, art, history and whale watching each offer different points of reference for planning your trip.
