The Stikine Region lies in the far northwest of British Columbia and borders the Yukon Territory and Alaska. Atlin offers insight into the region’s history; the wider regional area focuses on protected areas, wildlife habitats, and wilderness activities. Wilderness tourism is one of the Stikine Region’s economic activities. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can start planning your trip by considering whether you’re mainly interested in exploring Atlin’s historic sites or the natural areas farther afield.

Cultural Context and History in Atlin

The Stikine Region is the traditional territory of the Taku River Tlingit, Kaska Dene, Tahltan, Gitxsan, and Takla Lake First Nations; all have communities in the region. This context is part of understanding the destination, alongside the history of places that can be seen in Atlin today.

The Atlin Museum opened in 1972 and is housed in the former Atlin School. It displays exhibits and artifacts about Atlin’s early history. Outdoor exhibits include an IRI-A steam shovel—one individual exhibit that complements the displays about the town’s early years.

Another chapter in the town’s history is told by the Atlin Courthouse, built in 1900. It housed the courtroom and the offices of the Gold Commissioner and Mining Recorder. Today, the restored landmark houses the local library and the Atlin Courthouse Gallery, an artists’ co-operative. Thus, the building brings together its former public functions and its current cultural uses.

Atlin’s Globe Theatre is also part of its Gold Rush heritage: Edwin Pillman built it in 1917. The M.V. Tarahne was also launched in 1917 and carried passengers and freight across the lake for almost two decades. This historic transport service should be distinguished from its use for events: both the M.V. Tarahne and the Globe Theatre can be rented for weddings, meetings, concerts, and other private events. Availability and terms may change, so confirm them in advance if you’re planning an event.

A recurring event in Atlin is the Atlin Historical Society’s Tarahne Tea, held in early July. Volunteers serve tea and prepare sandwiches and desserts; specific dates may vary. If you’d like to include the tea in your travel plans, check the date for that year.

Nature and Activities in the Wider Region

Protected areas in the wider region showcase different aspects of the landscape and wildlife. The Chukachida Protected Area can be reached from the Stikine River by jet boat along the first 13 kilometres of the Chukachida River. The Pitman River Protected Area can be reached via the Stikine River by jet boat, canoe, kayak, or floatplane. The areas therefore offer different access options; the distance given for Chukachida refers to a stretch of river, not travel time.

Protected habitats also have their own distinct features: the Chukachida Protected Area provides important habitat for moose, grizzly bears, caribou, and several fish species. The Pitman River Protected Area is an important wildlife corridor connecting habitats in adjacent areas. Visitors to the remote Pitman River Protected Area often arrive by jet boat via the Stikine River to hunt moose.

Todagin South Slope Park has large populations of Stone Sheep and offers good opportunities for wildlife viewing. The park also protects habitat for mountain goats, grizzly bears, moose, and caribou. A trail leads from an area near Tatogga Lake to Todagin Mountain. These details offer different points to consider when planning a trip: wildlife viewing, protected habitats, and a trail to a named mountain are distinct reasons to explore the wider Stikine area.
