When planning a trip to Tlell, there are several options to consider: a day hike to a shipwreck, the multi-day route along East Beach, nature watching or an event. If you’re looking for a hotel in Tlell, you can first decide which of these activities will shape your stay. The trails differ significantly in duration and requirements; the two events also each have their own dates and formats.

The River and Getting Your Bearings Around Tlell

The Tlell River winds more than 55 kilometres inland. The river is home to runs of coho salmon and steelhead. If you plan to fish, be sure to follow the applicable provincial regulations. The location of the Tlall Conservancy also helps orient you geographically: the protected area lies immediately south and east of Tlell.

Highway 16 provides access to Naikoon Park near Tlell. Check current road and park advisories before setting out. This will help you keep the specific access to the park in mind without confusing it with the individual hiking trails.

Hikes of Varying Durations

The Pesuta Trail is a day hike through old-growth forest to a shipwreck. The Pesuta Shipwreck Trail starts at the Tlell River Day Use Area and runs through old-growth forest to the banks of the Tlell River, to the dunes and onward to East Beach. The bow of the Pesuta remains there. The 80-metre wooden freighter ran aground in December 1928. Check the tides and trail conditions before setting out.

The East Beach Trail is a remote, 90-kilometre multi-day hike from Tlell via Rose Spit to Tow Hill and requires careful preparation. Access to the trail is on the north bank of the Tlell River. You should also check local conditions before starting. This route is clearly distinct from the Pesuta hike, which is described as a day hike: its length, multi-day duration and the planning required are key considerations.

Another nearby option is the Anvil Trail. The 5-kilometre loop is accessible from a parking area off the highway. The trails can be distinguished by their documented features: Pesuta is a day hike, East Beach is a remote multi-day hike, and Anvil is a loop. The length of the Anvil Trail is provided, but not its hiking time.

Nature Watching and Events

The meadows near the BC Parks headquarters in Tlell are designated for birdwatching. They provide another specific point of reference for trip planning, alongside the river and hiking trails.

The Tlell Fall Fair takes place every year on the Sunday before BC Day. It features food, exhibits, live music and vendor booths. If you want to time your stay to coincide with the fair, check the date for that year before travelling. The Edge of the World Music Festival is also held in Tlell: it is a three-day musical experience featuring local artists and artists from beyond the islands. Check the current dates and program for this festival before travelling.
