Powell River combines the history of the Historic Townsite with coastal access, outdoor trails and a diverse cultural program. When planning your trip, you can choose different areas of focus: a look at the planned industrial town, time by the water, or a music or cultural event. The following places and events offer concrete pointers for choosing when to travel and what to do.

Historic Townsite and City History

The Powell River Townsite Historic District includes about 400 original houses that have been preserved. More than 97 percent of the existing building stock dates from before 1940; the site is considered a planned single-industry town from the first half of the 20th century. Powell River’s Historic Townsite was recognized as a National Historic Site of Canada in 1995 because it is a well-preserved example of a planned single-industry community.

The Patricia Theatre in Powell River’s Historic Townsite is Canada’s longest-operating movie theatre. It has been restored, preserving the original visitor experience while incorporating a modern digital picture and sound system. In the upper foyer of the Powell River Recreation Complex at 5001 Joyce Avenue, the Powell River Sports Hall of Fame celebrates the athletic achievements of current and former city residents.

At Willingdon Beach, the Forestry Museum offers insights into qathet’s logging and forestry history and the equipment used in the industry. It is located across from the qathet Museum & Archives. Together with the Sports Hall of Fame and the Patricia Theatre, it offers different perspectives on history and culture in Powell River.

Coastal Trails and Outdoor Activities

Powell River is right on the shores of the Salish Sea. Numerous public access points to ocean beaches are available year-round. Many hiking and cycling trails in the City of Powell River connect to the 180 km Sunshine Coast Trail. At Willingdon Beach, the Willingdon Beach Trail follows the shore along an old railway line from 1910, once used to transport logs to the Powell River Company Mill wharf.

Millennium Park lies between the Powell River Recreation Complex and Willingdon Beach. Its trails are suitable for hiking, cycling and walking, and accommodate all difficulty and fitness levels. Those looking for a designated accessible loop will find a fully accessible 2.8 km waterfront trail in Westview. Along the way, enjoy views of the Salish Sea and several benches where you can stop and rest.

There is also a dedicated facility for cycling and riding skills: the Powell River Bike & Skate Park, next to the Powell River Recreation Complex, features progressive jumps and ramps for different skill levels, as well as a concrete pump track. This offers a range of ways to enjoy the outdoors—from a waterfront walking trail to facilities for experienced cyclists.

Music and Events

International Choral Kathaumixw takes place in Powell River every two years and attracts 2,500 choristers from around the world. The Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA) is also held annually. Renowned guest artists and international music students take part; the students form the PRISMA Festival Orchestra. The Powell River Festival of the Performing Arts is also held annually, giving amateur performers in music, dance and spoken word a stage.

The Sunshine Music Festival is another annual event. It takes place over Labour Day weekend at Palm Beach Park on the Salish Sea, where it has been celebrated for more than 35 years. If you plan your trip around one of these events, check the exact event dates in advance.

Planning Your Journey

The area’s unique accessibility is also important for travel planning: Powell River can only be reached by air or water. Powell River Airport is an important transportation link for the community. Check flight connections before departure if you plan to travel by air.
