Maple Ridge: Trails, Water and Culture
Accommodation in Maple Ridge
Maple Ridge offers a variety of ways to shape your stay: biking and hiking trails, time at Whonnock Lake, natural areas and cultural offerings. If you’re looking for a hotel, the focus of your trip can help you choose what to see—whether that’s outdoor activity, an outing by the water, local history or events.
Trails, Lake and Parks
The local trail network includes more than 100 km of biking and hiking trails. This offers two different ways to spend active time outdoors: you can focus on hiking or biking. Whonnock Lake Park has a small sandy beach, a swimming area, hiking trails and a new playground. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and boating are also possible at Whonnock Lake. When planning your day, you can choose between activities on the water and the amenities in the park.
Kanaka Creek Regional Park is a 400-hectare wilderness park along 12 kilometres of Kanaka Creek. These figures describe two different dimensions of the natural area: the size of the park and the length of the creek section. Cliff Falls is the park’s focal point and is a good spot for picnics. Jerry Sulina Park has a historic dike trail system as well as an off-leash dog area with access to the water. If you’re travelling with a dog, this area is a practical option; the dike trail system also adds a touch of history.
Historic Sites in Maple Ridge
The Fraser River Heritage Walk connects important historic sites in Port Haney via a paved pedestrian path. Haney House has been open to the public since 1981 and has furnished rooms on both the main and upper floors.
The Maple Ridge Museum is housed in the former residence of the manager of the Port Haney Brick and Tile Company, built in 1907. The permanent exhibition on the main floor covers the Katzie First Nation, the pioneer settlement period and local industry. The building and exhibition offer different historical perspectives: the house is connected to the former brick company, while the exhibition explores other topics in local history.
Events and Conservation
The Maple Ridge ACT (Arts, Culture, Theatre) Arts Centre hosts a wide range of events, from performances by local school bands and dance performances to major productions and concerts. Its calendar features theatre, dance and comedy performances, as well as music events, throughout the year. If you’re travelling for a specific performance, check the calendar for exact dates in advance.
Allco Fish Hatchery offers information about the conservation of sockeye salmon and their release into the Alouette River. For travellers interested in conservation, the focus here is on a specific topic: protecting sockeye salmon.
