Tappen offers a range of experiences: guided encounters with rescued llamas and alpacas, a winery with tours and tasting opportunities, and a museum of historic vehicles. When planning your stay, you can choose between animal experiences, wine and exhibits.

Meet Llamas and Alpacas Up Close

At The Llama Sanctuary, visitors can enjoy safe, guided encounters up close with rescued llamas and alpacas. A guided tour lets visitors meet and feed 60 or more animals. The tour provides a clear structure for the visit, with the chance to experience the animals firsthand at its heart.

Advance booking is required for a tour. Check the current booking and visitor requirements before your visit, and reserve in advance. This lets you work the tour into your plans without assuming that walk-in visits are possible.

Wine, Tours and Picnics

Recline Ridge Winery offers a guided tour of its winemaking area and vineyards. If you are interested in the journey from vineyard to production, you can explore both as part of one visit. The tour is described as a visitor offering; contact the winery directly before travelling to ask about current availability.

For time outdoors, there is a patio and licensed picnic areas. You can sample the winery’s wines there and enjoy them with views of the vineyard and grounds. Since operating conditions may change, it is also a good idea to confirm the current availability of these visitor offerings before your trip.

Historic Vehicles Indoors and Outdoors

The White Post Auto Museum & Antiques Mall displays historic vehicles both in an indoor exhibition space and outdoors. This makes the museum visit different from seeing a single exhibition: the vehicles can be viewed in two distinct display areas. Opening hours may vary by season, so check them before your visit.

More Nature and Culture in Columbia-Shuswap

The wider Columbia-Shuswap destination offers additional park, hiking and cultural experiences. These range from short trails and waterfront areas to larger trail networks. The Columbia Shuswap Regional District includes approximately 60 developed parks and 86 kilometres of trails—a regional overview that gives a sense of the scale of the area’s parkland.

Shuswap Lake Park has a one-kilometre sandy and gravel beach with a buoy-marked swimming area. Canoeing is popular in the park. Copper Island is also in Shuswap Lake Park, where a 2.8-kilometre hiking trail runs. The beach and island trail offer different ways to enjoy the park: time by the water and a hiking route.

Tsútswecw Park has a 26-kilometre trail network used for hiking and mountain biking in summer, and cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The park also includes Shuswap cultural sites, including kekulis (pit houses), artifacts and rock paintings. These sites are strictly protected. Alongside its trail network, the park’s seasonal activities and protected cultural sites give it a cultural dimension.

Other trail lengths help distinguish the regional offerings. The Sicamous Creek Trails are an easy, 0.5-kilometre hike through hemlock trees along Sicamous Creek. The trails have parking for 15 to 20 vehicles, a picnic table and a pit toilet. The four-kilometre Shannon Beach Trail Network includes hiking and cycling trails with two loop options. The Salmon River Parallel Trail was completed in 2019: it is 3.65 kilometres long, non-motorized and runs between Haines Road and Silver Creek Community Park.

Waterfront access points and their conditions also vary. Shannon Beach is a Columbia Shuswap Regional District-owned park with more than 400 metres of shoreline on Shuswap Lake. Cambridge Road Lake Access is one of seven lake access points to Mara Lake in Swansea Point. At Hugh Road Community Park, a very steep trail leads to White Lake. These details offer different starting points for regional planning, without suggesting that all destinations have the same character or trail conditions.
