Redstone: Rivers, Highway 20 and regional excursions
Accommodation in Redstone
Redstone lies at the confluence of the Chilanko River and the Chilcotin River along Bella Coola Highway 20. Its riverside location, the route of the highway and nearby destinations offer concrete points of reference to help you consider Redstone as a destination for your stay.
Redstone on Highway 20
Highway 20 connects the Central Coast with the Central Interior, crossing the Coast Mountains and the Chilcotin Plateau. Alexis Creek lies east of Redstone on Highway 20 and is the service centre for the East Chilcotin region. Tatla Lake lies west of Redstone.
It is also worth being precise about place names: the community of Tŝideldel should not be confused with a separate locality named “Redstone.” This other locality lies 16 km east, at the confluence of the Chilanko River and the upper Chilcotin River. Redstone itself lies at the confluence of the Chilanko River and the Chilcotin River. This distinction is especially helpful when identifying places and destinations along Highway 20.
Accommodation and local amenities
The KiNiKiNiK Restaurant, store and accommodations are located in Redstone between the Chilancoh and Chilcotin rivers along Highway 20. KiNiKiNiK offers cottages and houses for rent.
The KiNiKiNiK Restaurant serves homemade, wholesome meals. From May to September, it serves homemade meals made with organic ingredients. This seasonal period is a specific point of reference for planning, while the location’s other amenities also include a restaurant and store.
Special features at KiNiKiNiK include Lover’s Bridge, which visitors can cross to reach a waterfall, as well as playgrounds for children. The green roof is reminiscent of historic sod roofs. This means that a landscape feature, playgrounds and architecture inspired by an older building style can all be found in one place.
Nature and history nearby
Nunsti Provincial Park lies directly south of Redstone. Redstone Native Cemetery is located near Redstone on the south side of Highway 20; visitors can pay their respects there. The park and cemetery offer different reasons to engage with the landscape and cultural heritage around the community.
There are hiking trails at Puntzi Lake. The lake lies west of Redstone and just over 7 km north of Highway 20. Farther north of Redstone, the Nazko Lakes offer a three- to four-day canoe route. The two options differ in activity and time required: one centres on hiking trails, the other on a multi-day canoe trip.
A broader horizon: Cariboo
In the broader Cariboo destination, the Cariboo Regional District trail network includes 22 wheelchair-accessible trails spread throughout the region. Another example is the Bullion Pit Low Mobility Trail, which offers a view of a human-made canyon dating from the gold rush. Both details relate to Cariboo as a broader destination.
The Telegraph Trail is also part of Cariboo’s regional history: the approximately 275-kilometre section in the Cariboo Regional District is part of the Collins Overland Telegraph Trail and its successor, the Yukon Telegraph Trail. Remaining sections are used as recreational trails by hikers and people interested in the province’s history. These regional trails add further historical and landscape themes in Cariboo to the features of Redstone itself.
