Saturna: Trails, Coastal Views and Island History
Accommodation in Saturna
In the wider region around Saturna, Saturna Island has natural and cultural destinations for a range of travel interests. If you’re looking for a hotel for Saturna, you can plan around specific interests: a short walk, a longer trail, coastal wildlife watching or the island’s history. The routes and places offer different points of interest for each.
Choose trails by length and difficulty
At Winter Cove, an easy 1.5-kilometre loop trail begins at the day-use area; the walk takes about 25 minutes. The Narvaez Bay Trail offers a different kind of outing: it starts at the parking lot at the end of Narvaez Bay Road, is moderately difficult and runs 1.7 kilometres, or about 30 minutes, one way. This makes it possible to compare an easy loop with a moderately difficult one-way trail with a stated distance and duration.
For a longer outing, the trailhead for the loop to Monarch Head is at the same end of Narvaez Bay Road. The route is moderately difficult to difficult, 2.5 kilometres long and takes about an hour and a half. The Lyall Creek Trail is moderately difficult, 2 kilometres, or about 40 minutes, one way, and starts either on Narvaez Bay Road or at the eastern end of Valley Road. It passes through the forested interior of the island, past a moss-covered waterfall, and ends at East Point Road. The stated distances and times give you a concrete basis for distinguishing a short loop from a longer outing; trail conditions can change.
Some trails in Saturna Island’s community parks have rough, steep terrain, exposed roots and steep stairs without handrails. They may not be easily accessible to people with limited mobility; conditions vary by trail. Fires and camping are not permitted in Saturna Island’s community parks and on its trails. Follow the posted rules when visiting.
Coast, wildlife watching and activities
East Point Regional Park on Saturna Island features coastal cliffs and views of the San Juan Islands and the mainland of the U.S. state of Washington. Visitors can watch wildlife at East Point. Marine life found there includes 25 species of whales and dolphins and five species of seals and sea lions; river otters and sea otters are also present. Those planning a trip around the coast and its wildlife will find a different focus here than on the island trails.
Beach access points also vary: Saturna Parks & Recreation maintains, among other places on Saturna Island, Trillium, with a shell beach, and Veruna Beach, with a sandy beach. Conditions at individual access points can change. Visitors can play disc golf at Thomson Park. Kayaking in both calm and choppier waters is also an activity on Saturna Island.
Lighthouse and island history
The light station at East Point was built between 1881 and 1887 to warn ships about the dangerous waters of Boiling Reef. East Point Lighthouse is a 14-metre-high, square, tapered steel-frame tower with six platforms. The Fog Alarm Building (FAB) was historically part of East Point Light Station and is designated a Canadian Heritage Light Station.
The Saturna Heritage Centre, also known as Tekteksen (“Long Nose”), is located in the FAB at East Point. Its displays include island archives and natural history and historical exhibits. During the 2026 summer season, the Centre opened on select weekends with volunteer staffing; confirm access before visiting. The Centre brings together island archives and natural history with the history of the lighthouse and shipping.
The Saturna Island Lamb BBQ is also part of the island’s history: the community has held it annually since 1950. It began as a school picnic at Saturna Beach and grew into a community-wide event with more than 1,500 visitors. The Canada Day Lamb BBQ serves a full meal featuring local Saturna lamb, grilled over an open fire and carved directly onto the plate.
Wine, dining and getting there
When Sage Hayward Vineyards is open seasonally, visitors can enjoy the winery’s wines on the patio. It is on Saturna Island on Quarry Road, between Campbell Farm and Thompson Park. Opening hours are seasonal; check current dates before visiting. Feral Goat Bistro serves wood-fired pizza and other dishes made with local ingredients. Menus and service can change, so it’s a good idea to check the latest details directly.
BC Ferries offers service to Saturna Island from Swartz Bay, Tsawwassen and other southern Gulf Islands. Lyall Harbour ferry terminal is in the northwest of the island, at the western end of East Point Road. From Lyall Harbour, routes include connections to Galiano Island, Mayne Island, Pender Island, Salt Spring Island, Vancouver (Tsawwassen) and Victoria (Swartz Bay). Schedules can change, so check departure times for your trip.
