Red Deer offers a range of ways to plan a stay, including natural history and trails, local history, sports, and seasonal activities. Which ones you include may also influence your choice of travel dates. The city cannot be reduced to a single theme.

Nature and trails in Red Deer

Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary is a 118-hectare municipal park and also a federally designated migratory bird sanctuary. It is located right next to the Kerry Wood Nature Centre, which offers an extensive program focused on natural history. The sanctuary and the nature centre offer two different ways to enjoy an outing in nature.

More than 110 kilometres of paved and unpaved trails cross Red Deer’s Waskasoo Park system. Maskepetoon Park is also located in the west of the city: its paths and trails pass through forest and wetlands. The descriptions of the two parks emphasize different features—the Waskasoo system’s size and trail surfaces, and Maskepetoon Park’s forest and wetland landscape. Red Deer also offers a variety of cycling experiences for BMX riders, mountain bikers, and recreational cyclists.

Local history and culture

The heritage walking tours take visitors through the city centre. One of them is the Ghost Collection Heritage Walking Tour, which leads visitors to ten life-size bronze ghosts scattered throughout downtown Red Deer. It combines a walk through downtown with a specific collection of stops; no duration or fixed pace for the tour is specified.

At the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery, visitors can learn more about the people, history, and culture of Central Alberta. Sunnybrook Farm Museum presents the history of early farming in Alberta. Those interested in the cultural and social development of the region will find different perspectives here, from a focus on people and their history to an emphasis on agriculture.

The Norwegian Laft Hus Museum houses artifacts and a small shop. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum offers a family-friendly, interactive experience. Red Deer’s attractions therefore range from cultural and historical topics to an interactive exploration of sports.

West of Red Deer, the Fort Normandeau Interpretive Centre tells the story of the city’s three founding cultures: the Cree and Blackfoot, Métis buffalo hunters, and early European settlers. Its offerings include programs, hands-on activities, theatre, and special events. As an excursion destination, it is a distinct point of interest west of the city for exploring these historical themes.

Activities by season and interest

Visitors who want to fish will find easy access to various fishing opportunities in the Waskasoo Park system. Red Deer also has six boat and canoe launches. During the warm summer months, Bower Ponds offers pedal boat, kayak, and canoe rentals; confirm seasonal availability before your trip.

Discovery Canyon offers seasonal river tubing. Operating details depend on the weather. At Heritage Ranch, horseback rides and wagon rides are among the equestrian activities; booking details may change. It’s a good idea to check the relevant conditions for these activities before your trip.

In winter, Red Deer has more than 30 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails within the city limits. This is a different seasonal focus from the warm summer months at Bower Ponds or the weather-dependent tubing at Discovery Canyon. First Fridays, meanwhile, takes place monthly. This distinction can help when planning a hotel stay: choose your travel dates based on the experience you want to enjoy in Red Deer.
