Discover Cardston through a range of themes: the Remington Carriage Museum focuses on horse-drawn transportation in North America, historic buildings reflect the development of the city and its province, and the Alberta Temple combines architectural significance with an impressive landscape setting. When planning your visit, consider whether you’re more interested in transportation history, Cardston’s history, architecture, or an activity.

Museums and Historic Buildings

The Remington Carriage Museum tells the story of horse-drawn transportation in North America. This makes transportation history a distinct focus alongside Cardston’s historic buildings. If you’re especially interested in the development of transportation, the museum offers a clear thematic connection.

The C.O. Card House connects architectural and urban history. Built in 1887, it is the oldest surviving log house in the Cardston district. It is also associated with Charles Ora Card, the founder of present-day Cardston and the person responsible for Canada’s first Mormon “stake.” The house thus brings together a tangible architectural record of the past and a central figure in the city’s founding.

The Cardston Courthouse also connects local architectural history to a broader political era. It was the first courthouse built by the new province of Alberta after its establishment in 1905. The building is also a rare example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The Courthouse Museum displays the judge’s chair, the witness stand, other court artifacts, and the original jail cells. Its history can therefore be traced through both its architecture and tangible objects from the judicial system.

The Alberta Temple and Its Landscape

The Alberta Temple is a nationally significant architectural and historical landmark. The Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Cardston stands against the impressive backdrop of Chief Mountain. This place brings together the building’s national significance and its setting in the landscape. Along with architecture and history, the mountain backdrop also shapes the temple’s character.

Horseback Riding and Timed Events at the Agridome

The Agridome offers a different kind of activity. People can ride horses and train for timed events there, whatever the weather. This sets it apart from the museums and historic buildings: here, the focus is on horseback riding and training, while the other places mentioned highlight transportation history, local history, architecture, or court artifacts. You can explore Cardston through a range of interests without conflating its cultural themes with its sporting activities.
