Discover Viking: History, Trails and Nature
Accommodation in Viking
When searching for a hotel in Viking, your interests may guide your choice: Would you like to experience local history and culture, use the Walking Trail, or spend time at nature spots in the surrounding area? Viking offers specific places to visit in town and nearby for each of these interests.
History and Culture in Viking
The Viking Historical Museum displays pioneer artifacts, maps and photographs of the area. The museum grounds include restored buildings: a church, a store with a post office, a one-room schoolhouse and a farmhouse. This places collection pieces and views of the area alongside buildings representing different aspects of local life.
Viking Troll Park also brings together nature and Scandinavian history and culture. Visitors of all ages can enjoy nature there and experience these themes. St. Matthew Anglican Church in Viking is open to visitors. Those interested in striking rock formations can find the Viking Ribstones near Viking: two large stones shaped like an animal’s rib cage that have remained in their original location for thousands of years.
Walking Trail and Activities in Town
The Viking Walking Trail links existing sidewalks and road routes into an extended route for exploring Viking. It is designed for walking, cycling and roller skating; it is also suitable for strollers, wheelchairs and scooters. The trail is free to use. It offers a way to include different modes of travel while exploring the town.
Other amenities each have their own focus. The Viking Fish Pond in Viking/Beaver Business Park is stocked with rainbow trout. Viking’s Off-Leash Dog Park provides a safe, fenced area where dogs can run and exercise. The Viking Farmers Market offers homemade baked goods and fresh produce.
Events and Golf
The Cloverlodge Stampede Association holds the Stampede at the Rodeo Grounds in Viking every summer. The Viking & District Agricultural Society also holds chariot and chuckwagon races there every July. The two events are therefore tied to different time references: the Stampede takes place in summer, while July is specified for the races. If you plan to visit for an event, check the specific dates in advance.
Viking Golf and Country Club is on the edge of town and has a 9-hole course. Numerous tournaments are held there each year. Golf and events can therefore be considered as different interests for a stay in Viking; if you are travelling for a tournament, it is also a good idea to check its date.
Nature Spots Nearby
Near Viking, Camp Lake Park offers two beaches and opportunities for swimming, boating, water skiing, canoeing, hiking and birdwatching. The options range from water activities to trails and nature observation. Which ones you plan to enjoy depends on what you would like to do during your stay.
Another nearby destination is Camp Lake Campground, with a lake, scenic trails and opportunities for birdwatching. Camp Lake Park and Camp Lake Campground each offer different ways to enjoy nature; the features mentioned vary between the two locations.
