Seine Bight and the Welcome Center

The Seine Bight Welcome Center is located right on the beach on Main Street. This provides a clearly identified landmark for finding your way around town: Seine Bight now has a specific location description that brings together the beach and Main Street. The community center is intended to serve residents and visitors. Its location and intended purpose describe two different aspects of the place: a named spot on the beach and a facility whose role includes both groups.

A compact Garifuna cultural exhibit is planned for the Welcome Center. It is intended to preserve and share Garifuna stories, experiences and cultural heritage, as well as traditional storytelling. The project gives the center’s cultural focus a clear emphasis. If you are considering Seine Bight from a cultural perspective, this planned focus should be distinguished from the exhibit shown at the inauguration.

The Welcome Center was inaugurated on November 24. Creative South, featuring works by emerging and established artists from southern Belize, was shown at the opening. The exhibition was organized by the National Institute of Culture and History and Imagination Factri. Creative South was therefore part of the opening, while the compact Garifuna exhibit is part of the planned project. This distinction is useful for travel planning: an exhibit shown at the opening describes an event at that time; the compact exhibit is part of the center’s planned development. This makes it possible to consider the art exhibition and Garifuna storytelling tradition as different areas of focus without conflating one with the other.

Cultural perspectives across the wider destination of Stann Creek

The wider destination of Stann Creek offers other Garifuna cultural experiences, which are distinct from the planned exhibit in Seine Bight. In Dangriga, visitors can take part in Garifuna cultural dances, experience drumming music and enjoy culinary specialties. At the Lebeha Drumming Center in Hopkins, visitors can learn to play Garifuna drums. The two places offer different ways to explore the subject: Dangriga focuses on dance, music and food, while the center in Hopkins offers the opportunity to learn to play the drums.

In the wider destination of Stann Creek, the Serpon Sugar Mill illustrates the development of the sugar industry in southern Belize and its effects on the economy and cultural landscape. This adds industrial history as a second regional perspective alongside Garifuna cultural topics. The region thus offers both an industrial-history perspective and specific Garifuna cultural experiences.

For visits to South Water Caye, Placencia, Dangriga and Hopkins are good starting points in the wider destination of Stann Creek. This regional overview complements the cultural topics with three specifically named places from which to visit the caye. When planning your trip, you can consider two questions separately: Which cultural topics interest you, and which of the named starting points is relevant for your visit to South Water Caye?
