When planning your trip, you can focus on different aspects of Niue: trails through coral landscapes, experiences at sea, and village culture featuring local crafts and food.

Trails and landscapes

The trail to Togo begins about four kilometres north of Hakupu. It leads down through rugged coral pinnacles to a grassy plain and a ravine; at the bottom is a beach with fine, golden sand. The hike is rated moderate to challenging. The landscape along the route and its difficulty rating are useful points of reference when planning this excursion.

The well-marked trail to Limu begins at the northern end of Namukulu village, where picnic areas are available. The trail to the Talava Arches is also well marked: it branches off to the right from the access path to Matapa Chasm. At Limu, the starting point and picnic areas provide guidance; at the Talava Arches, look for the turnoff from the path to Matapa Chasm. When choosing a trail, you can compare these features with the rating for the hike to Togo.

Experiences in and on the sea

Niue’s hard coral reefs are home to several endemic species. When diving, you can explore grottoes, caves, coral walls and drop-offs. This offers a chance to see underwater landscapes that differ from those encountered on hikes on land.

Humpback whales pass through Niue’s waters roughly between July and September. Encounters off Niue are possible only with licensed operators. If you are interested in this experience, take both the approximate season and the restriction to licensed operators into account.

Fishing experiences include traditional fishing from a vaka (canoe) and catching flying fish with nets. Several professional operators also offer fishing trips on charter boats. The methods range from fishing in a vaka and netting flying fish to trips on charter boats.

Village culture and crafts

Each of the fourteen villages holds an annual village festival. The programme includes local cuisine, arts and crafts, sports, cultural presentations and performances. Visitors can sample food prepared in an earth oven, or umu, at the festivals.

Local women’s groups demonstrate how crafts are made using coconut and pandanus leaves. Some weaving groups offer the opportunity, for a fee, to make your own craft item and take it home. Visitors can also meet local producers who grow and harvest Niuean vanilla. Check before your trip whether this activity is available on your dates.

Market and local food

Niue’s Makete, in the centre of Alofi, is held on Tuesday and Friday mornings. Market times can change, so check the schedule locally. Traditional foods available in Niue include coconut crab (uga), taro (talo), breadfruit, cassava and shellfish. Availability of many market foods may depend on the season.

There are different points of reference for planning your timing: the humpback whale migration has an approximate seasonal window, while the Makete takes place on specific days of the week, and its current schedule should be checked locally.
