Schoondijke is a destination whose agricultural history is reflected in several specific features: the character of the surrounding area, its sculptures, and Hulsters Molen. A war memorial and the Landbouwmuseum Het Klinket are also among the themes that shape the town. If you are looking for a hotel in Schoondijke, these local features can help you get a sense of your destination’s character.

Agriculture and Local History

The agricultural character of the area around Schoondijke is still clearly visible, even though agriculture has become less important. This connection also appears in the town’s history and art. Schoondijke already existed in 1248 under the former name Vuyldijke. Its long history and visible agricultural character offer two distinct perspectives: a historical connection and a theme that continues to be explored in works of art today.

Sculptures with Agricultural Themes

At the center is De Zaaier, a work by sculptor Philip ten Klooster. It was installed in 1965 and symbolizes Schoondijke’s agricultural tradition. On the renovated village square, Landarbeiders by Jan Haas pays tribute to the workers employed in agriculture. Het Paard stands on Lange Heerenstraat. The artwork symbolizes the village’s close connection with agriculture and also pays tribute to the Zeeuwse trekpaard.

The three works highlight different aspects: De Zaaier represents the agricultural tradition, Landarbeiders focuses on people at work, and Het Paard on the draught horse. Those interested in art around the town can also follow the Landbouw Wandeling, a route that leads to six different sculptures in Schoondijke. These works show how closely local art and agriculture are connected here.

Hulsters Molen and Its History

Hulsters Molen is a round stone grain mill in Schoondijke, Zeeland. It was originally built in 1884 by Belgian millwright P. Willems. After a fire left only the body of the mill standing, it was restored in 1900. This involved, among other things, using a cap from a post mill in Bruges and a spruit from a mill in Cadzand. The different origins of these parts are part of the mill’s distinctive restoration history.

Grain is still milled by volunteers at Hulsters Molen today. Freshly milled flour is available at the mill. This makes both the mill’s history and a tangible product part of the experience. If you would like to include the flour availability in your plans, check the latest visitor information in advance.

Landbouwmuseum Het Klinket

Landbouwmuseum Het Klinket displays an extensive collection of old agricultural machinery. Temporary exhibitions and new exhibits supplement the collection. Historical equipment is therefore presented alongside changing displays. Het Klinket also offers farmer’s golf and footgolf. The museum and the two activities have different focuses, but all relate to the same agricultural themes.

Remembering the Years of Occupation

Schoondijke’s war memorial commemorates all fellow residents who lost their lives as a result of acts of war during the years of occupation. On October 23, 2010, a natural stone plaque bearing the names of 33 residents who died was added. This place of remembrance adds a distinct commemorative dimension to the agricultural and historical themes. Together, these features paint a picture of Schoondijke shaped by local history, agriculture, art, and remembrance.
