Nieuwvliet: Beach, Nature and Village History
Accommodation in Nieuwvliet
Nieuwvliet offers a range of options for a stay: the wide beach at Nieuwvliet-Bad, paths through coastal landscapes and historic buildings in the village. When looking for a hotel in Nieuwvliet, you can first consider whether you want your stay to focus on the beach and tides, nature trails or village history.
Coastal Landscapes and Walking Trails
The Verdronken Zwarte Polder nature reserve lies near Nieuwvliet, where the Westerschelde estuary meets Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. This protected area includes mudflats, salt marshes, dunes, tidal creeks and beach, and is home to a wide variety of plants and animals. If you would like to experience different coastal landscapes on an outing, you will find more than just a stretch of beach here: the transitions between mudflats, salt marsh and dunes are also part of the landscape.
The nature reserve has a 2.5-kilometre walking trail and an equestrian trail. The walking trail starts at several points along the Zeedijk. Another option is the 8.6-kilometre coastal walk “Land and Water near Nieuwvliet.” It passes through polders, a saline nature reserve, beach, sea and dunes. Longer sections run along wooden boardwalks through salt marshes and mudflats; songbirds can be heard in the shrubs along the sandy path. The route lengths offer a useful comparison: the walk in the nature reserve is 2.5 kilometres long, while the coastal walk is 8.6 kilometres.
An unpaved path also runs through the Baanstpolder, passing through newly created nature and directly alongside a watercourse. Here, the path and watercourse take centre stage, while the coastal walk “Land and Water near Nieuwvliet” includes salt marshes, mudflats, beach and dunes, among other landscapes.
Beach and Cycling Routes
The wide beach at Nieuwvliet-Bad is popular with families. At low tide, many shallow pools form there, making it suitable for small children. If you want to plan your visit around these pools, the tide is important: they form at low tide. In this respect, a beach visit differs from a walk, which is more likely to be chosen based on distance and landscape.
For mountain bikers, the red loop of the “Grensstreek” MTB route covers 35 kilometres through Cadzand, Retranchement and partly through Belgium. 52 percent of the route is on unpaved paths. The route starts at Boerenhoeve Nieuwvliet. For mountain bikers, Boerenhoeve provides parking, a workshop, a bike-washing facility and showers. The activities can therefore be compared using different key figures: the 2.5- and 8.6-kilometre walks are followed by a 35-kilometre mountain bike route with a stated proportion of unpaved paths.
An unpaved path through the Baanstpolder may also be worth considering if you are interested in paths alongside a watercourse and newly created nature. It offers a distinct landscape experience from the routes mentioned above; the 2.5 kilometres refer to the walking trail in the Verdronken Zwarte Polder nature reserve, while the 8.6 kilometres refer to the coastal walk “Land and Water near Nieuwvliet.”
Village History and Historic Buildings
The Nederlands Hervormde Kerk is the oldest building in the village and a Rijksmonument. The small hall church dates from 1658, making it a tangible link to Nieuwvliet’s earlier architectural history. The village’s grain mill also dates back a long way: the round stone smock mill dates from 1850. Volunteer millers still grind grain there, and fresh organic wholemeal wheat flour and spelt are also sold.
The village’s origins can be traced to three historic seigneuries: Nieuwvliet emerged from Nieuwvliet, Mettenije and Sint-Pieter. Visitors interested in local history can connect this historical development with the two distinct buildings: the church dating from 1658 and the grain mill dating from 1850. Fossilised shark teeth are also regularly found along the coast near Nieuwvliet. These natural finds add another aspect to exploring the area, alongside the walking trails, beach landscapes and historic sites.
