If you are looking for a hotel in Noordgouwe, the village’s local character can help you choose your destination: its protected village setting, the Driekoningenkerk and its local history are cultural highlights. There are also walking routes in the rural surroundings of Noordgouwe and Schuddebeurs, as well as a cycling route that passes through Noordgouwe. This allows you to weigh up whether architectural history, landscape or outdoor activity matters most for your trip.

Village Setting and Driekoningenkerk

Noordgouwe is a protected village setting and a ring village: the church stands at the centre, surrounded by a moat and old houses. This spatial arrangement gives the village a clear framework. The Driekoningenkerk is a single-nave cruciform church with a three-sided chancel and a built-in, three-storey tower. “Single-nave” describes a floor plan with one nave; the chancel and tower complete this architectural form. The church also contains an octagonal baptismal font made of hard stone. It is probably 500 years old and is once again serving its original purpose. The church building therefore offers both architectural features and a distinct historic object to explore.

The Gouwe once flowed through the site of today’s village of Noordgouwe; near Zierikzee, this waterway was connected to the open sea. This historic water geography adds an older landscape history to the village’s built character.

Building and Social History

In chronological order, the houses at Huisje de Pottere date back the furthest: Maria de Pottere had them built in 1651 to support the widows of fallen officers. The Oude Molenwerf is a long-gabled farmstead with a bakehouse dating from 1700. In 1785, Buitenplaats Weelzicht was expanded as a country estate for the mayor of Zierikzee. Meestoof Willem III was founded in 1863 and was used to process madder roots. The dates refer to different events: construction, the dating of a farmstead, expansion and foundation. This distinction helps place these milestones in chronological order, rather than reading all the dates as equivalent construction years.

Walking and Cycling Routes

In the rural surroundings of Noordgouwe and Schuddebeurs, walking routes cross the agricultural landscape, follow dikes and waterways, pass through woodland and go through village centres and past monuments. The selection therefore covers a range of landscape and settlement types. When planning, it may be important to consider whether you are more interested in open spaces, waterways, woodland or village settings. Check the current route conditions before setting out on a walk.

Weeltje van Arjaon de Kuper is a remnant of a dike breach, adding a specific story to the landscape. For cycling, the “Monumentale dorpen en gehuchten” route passes through Noordgouwe. This means the cycling option described is one specific route with a name, while the walking routes cover the rural surroundings and several types of landscape. When weighing up the activities, you can consider both how you want to get around and the area described.
