If you are looking for a hotel in Wemeldinge, you can think of the village in terms of two clearly distinct themes: its location on the Oosterschelde, with the dive sites in the Wemeldinge-Kattendijke area, and its historic windmill landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider whether you are mainly interested in dive sites, the beach, cycling or architectural history. These themes describe different aspects of the village and can be distinguished by specific places and structures.

Dive sites on the Oosterschelde

Wemeldinge is particularly well known for its dive sites. The Wemeldinge-Kattendijke area is described as the Netherlands’ first five-star diving hotspot. Two named sites provide more precise reference points: The wreck “Galjoen zonder poen” lies off Wemeldinge West, about a five-minute swim from shore, at a depth of around 25 metres. “De Hoek” is also off Wemeldinge West, where the dike bends towards the Oosterschelde.

The descriptions distinguish the sites by their location and depth: for the wreck, the approximate swim time and depth are given; for “de Hoek,” the course of the dike serves as a landmark. This gives anyone interested in dive sites several specific reference points rather than just a general description of Wemeldinge’s waterside. The wreck and “de Hoek” are separate locations; the location described for one should not be attributed to the other.

Beach, tides and cycling route

Wemeldinge Beach lies behind the promenade on the Oosterschelde and near the village’s marina. Much of the beach disappears at high tide. The tide level is therefore a practical guide when planning a beach visit: it affects how much of the beach is visible at that time. Its location behind the promenade and near the marina also provides a clear description of where the beach is, without conflating it with the dive sites off Wemeldinge West.

Wemeldinge Beach is also a specific point of interest for cyclists. It is a designated stop on the 51.4-kilometre “Zilte route langs mosselen en oesters” cycling route. The route thus links a named trail with a designated stop at the beach. If you are including cycling in your travel plans, you can consider the total route length and the beach as a stop separately; the stop alone does not provide information about other sections of the route.

Historic windmills in Wemeldinge

Molen De Hoop is a grain mill dating from 1866, on Westelijke Kanaalweg in Wemeldinge. It is a round stone Dutch windmill with a wingspan of 21.70 metres. The year it was built, its design and its dimensions each provide a different perspective on the structure: the year places its construction in time, while its round form, stone construction and wingspan describe its architecture in concrete terms. Anyone interested in the history of windmills can therefore appreciate both the historical context and the structural features of De Hoop.

A second windmill is Molen Aeolus, a grain and peeling mill built in 1869 in Wemeldinge. It is still almost completely equipped with three pairs of millstones and a peeling stone faced with sheet metal. Unlike De Hoop, whose external dimensions are highlighted, the focus here is on the equipment: the millstones and peeling stone illustrate the mill’s different functions. The two structures thus offer different points of interest for visitors interested in architecture and milling technology.

Molen De Hoop is listed as open to visitors on Saturdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Molen Aeolus is listed as open to visitors on the last Saturday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Check the respective visiting hours before your trip. This allows you to take these details into account when planning without treating the stated time slots as confirmation of current access.
