In Utrecht, architectural history, music and city history offer distinct areas of interest. The Dom Tower and the medieval Oudegracht offer a different perspective from the Rietveld Schröder House, DOMunder or Museum Speelklok.

Architecture and City History

The Dom Tower is 112 metres and 32 centimetres tall, making it the tallest church tower in the Netherlands. On guided tours, an experienced guide takes visitors up the tower and shares its history and restoration story. Utrecht’s Oudegracht and its wharves form a system developed in the Middle Ages that is considered unique in the world. The Dom Tower and the canal thus bring two distinct chapters of the city’s history into focus: a landmark structure and a historic system of canal and wharves.

The Rietveld Schröder House is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a highlight of the De Stijl movement. Utrecht architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld designed it in 1924 on commission from Truus Schröder, a widow. The year it was built, its client and its architect give the house a specific origin story; its status as a World Heritage Site and a highlight of De Stijl add an art-historical perspective.

Founded in 1838, Centraal Museum is the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands. Its collection includes art, Utrecht city history, fashion and applied arts. The museum also holds the world’s largest collection of Rietveld objects. There are therefore two distinct ways to explore Rietveld: the house he designed and the objects in a collection that also encompasses other areas of art and city history.

Underground Discoveries and Mechanical Music

DOMunder’s guided underground discovery tour leads beneath Domplein, past the remains of a Roman fortress and medieval buildings. With a flashlight, visitors explore 2,000 years of Domplein history and archaeological treasures. The place and the long span of time are connected: the tour goes beneath a present-day square and explores several historical periods.

At Museum Speelklok, an interactive Musical Tour explores mechanical instruments. They are demonstrated as the stories and techniques behind the centuries-old musical machines are explained. The museum expedition also includes a Royal Room featuring music boxes and musical clocks. While the tour focuses on how the instruments work and their history, the room highlights specific types of mechanical music. Tour times and arrangements may change; check the details before your visit.

Museum Speelklok is a ten-minute walk from Utrecht Centraal station. Alternatively, city bus line 2 towards Museumkwartier goes to the Domplein stop; you can also reach the museum this way. As public transport arrangements may change, check the current timetable before travelling.
