Leusden brings together traces of different eras, cultural attractions and routes for walking and mountain biking. If you are looking for a hotel in Leusden, your planned itinerary can be a good starting point: would you like to explore historic sites, include art and theatre, or spend time on a walking or cycling route? The options vary in both theme and format, as well as in route length.

The Grebbelinie and Historic Traces

Leusden is home to dykes, casemates and bunkers that remain from the Grebbelinie, a military defensive line dating from the 18th century. Many of these traces can be found around the Asschatterkeerkade. The kade is one of the oldest surviving elements of the Grebbelinie, dates from 1745 and is 2,500 metres long. After the war, it was developed into an ecological area. Bats and other mammals live there, along with up to forty different bird species. This named location thus brings together military history and subsequent ecological development.

The burial mounds on the Leusderhei and near Oud Leusden tell the story of a different historical period. They recall the area’s first settled inhabitants, from the Bronze Age onwards. The Museumbunker on Langesteeg takes visitors back to 1944–1945: the German bunker was built during those years and converted into a small museum at the end of 2014. From Bronze Age traces to this bunker, the historical span covers many centuries.

The Oudste torentje van Nederland at Vlooswijkseweg 2 is also a protected building: it is a Rijksmonument and probably the oldest tower in the Netherlands. On special opening days, you can climb the tower and enjoy the view. As these openings are not dated, it is advisable to check in advance whether a climb is planned.

Museums, Theatre and History

The small M.A.C. House Leusden museum is dedicated to modern art and special installations. Theatre de Tuin features music, cabaret, art and film. Historische Kring Leusden organises talks, walks and exhibitions. The cultural offering ranges from modern art and installations to stage and film events, as well as historical subjects presented in different formats.

Walking and Mountain Biking

The 1.5-kilometre Filosofenpad ISVW runs through Landgoed ISVW and the Oud-Leusden woodland and heathland. Ten figures from the history of philosophy are introduced via QR codes with audio content, which can be updated. The route thus combines a specific distance with a philosophical theme.

The Schutpad, the first Klompenpad walking trail, runs through the parkland around the manor house of Landgoed De Boom. Access and signage may change, so you should check the information before setting off. Landgoed De Boom is a varied, largely preserved cultural landscape between Leusden, Woudenberg, Achterveld and De Glind. The Schutpad passes through the estate’s parkland, while the description of the landscape places the route in a broader regional context.

For a different kind of activity, the Treeker mountain biking trail network consists of two connected routes: a blue route through Den Treek, 24.4 kilometres long, and a red route through Henschoten, 16.1 kilometres long. The stated distances and applicable rules may change. Check both before your ride when planning your route. The two distances provide a concrete basis for choosing a ride that suits the planned distance.
