Bilthoven: Forest Trails and Architecture
Accommodation in Bilthoven
Bilthoven combines walking and hiking trails with distinctive architecture and places of remembrance. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore the landscape, admire architectural history, or combine the two. The places and trails offer different highlights, from beech avenues and wooded areas to a Rijksmonument and a Geopad through the built-up area.
On Foot Through De Leyen and Beukenburg
The Belevingsroute De Leyen & Beukenburg begins at the car park in the De Leyen recreational area. This starting point is about a 15-minute walk from Bilthoven NS railway station. De Leyen also serves as a starting point or rest stop for hikes, cycling trips, horseback rides, and dog walks.
De Leyen and Beukenburg include farmland and woodland. Trails run past old coppice plots and through a park-like woodland with monumental beech avenues. The walking route through De Leyen also follows beech avenues. The old beeches provide habitat for bats, owls, and woodpeckers. A walk here therefore brings both the landscape and its importance as a habitat into focus.
Another trail with its own focus is the Geopad. It can be walked in both directions through Bilthoven’s built-up area, allowing you to admire the notable architecture twice. The Geopad also leads into the public walking area of Biltse Duinen. Heidepark, in turn, is a wooded area surrounding heathland with old pine trees. These different landscapes give you more than one way to plan a stay that includes getting around on foot.
Architecture and Places of Remembrance
Huize Gaudeamus is a Rijksmonument in Bilthoven. The house was built in 1924 in the Amsterdam School style as a country home for the musician Julius Rontgen. Its historical purpose and architecture give the building a character distinct from that of the trails and wooded areas. Dates can be arranged for using Huize Gaudeamus for cultural events.
The Julianaflatcomplex is also part of the town’s architectural history. Located opposite Bilthoven railway station, it was designed by Dudok for this site between 1955 and 1960. Anyone walking the Geopad through the built-up area can admire the architecture in both directions. The route and the building can thus be seen as two aspects of the same walk, without architecture and landscape needing to be the main focus equally.
The Herdenkingsmonument De Bilt in Bilthoven commemorates all victims of the Second World War. It stands at the entrance to Jagtlust municipal offices on Soestdijkseweg. At the edge of the De Leyen recreational area is the “verloren kerkhof,” a cultural-historical monument. It commemorates the vagrants buried there and the people who hid during the Second World War. Both sites serve as memorials, but refer to different people and places.
Landscape, Leisure, and Local History
De Biltse Duinen was designated a municipal landscape monument around 2007. The protection covers the entire area, including the golf course and adjoining campsite. The local history here also reaches back to Natuurbad De Biltse Duinen, which opened in Bilthoven in 1933.
For golf enthusiasts, Golfpark De Biltse Duinen has a specific booking deadline: tee times can be booked online no more than two weeks in advance. If golf is important to your plans, check the golf park’s current information, as booking rules may change.
Zwembad Brandenburg has a 25-metre pool. It welcomes lap swimmers, participants in aqua fitness classes, children taking swimming lessons, and the local water polo club every day. As the programme may change, it is advisable to check the operator’s current offerings before visiting. For your plans, this means Bilthoven offers swimming and golf as well as trails and buildings; which of these matters to you depends on your travel plans.
