Werkhoven offers several specific starting points for planning a trip: hiking trails with various historical connections, church and mill history, and local offerings related to fruit and lunch. This lets you shape your stay around the topics that interest you, rather than turning individual places into a fixed sightseeing itinerary.

Hiking with historical connections

The “Pad langs Beverweerd” hiking trail follows the sequence of junctions 63–62–61–59–58–53–55–85–62–63. In Werkhoven, it passes the monumental lock, which is part of the Waterlinie. A specifically named route and a connection to the Waterlinie heritage are therefore among the features of this hike. Check the route conditions before setting out.

Stage 10 of the Romeinse Limespad offers a different historical perspective. It starts in Werkhoven and follows the entire Roman Limes in the Netherlands; the Limes has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since summer 2021. The two hiking options have different focuses: the Pad langs Beverweerd centers on the lock and the Waterlinie, while the Romeinse Limespad focuses on the Roman Limes. If you plan to hike Stage 10, check the route conditions before setting off.

Kasteel Beverweerd and local history

Kasteel Beverweerd can be reached from Werkhoven via the medieval Beverweertseweg and the Molenhoeflaan, which dates back to the 16th century. The two roads thus bring different historical periods into your plans. The castle lies in landscaped grounds on the Kromme Rijn, on the border between the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the wet polders of the Lopikerwaard. It is a Rijksmonument; the landscape includes old oak trees, broad castle moats and centuries-old avenues.

The earliest recorded mention of the church in Werkhoven dates from the 8th century or the first half of the 9th century; at that time it was called Werkundia. Around 1100, the wooden church in Werkhoven was replaced by a church built of tuff stone. The history of the mill also goes back a long way: the earliest recorded mention of Werkhoven’s mill dates from 1395; at that time, it stood near Kasteel Beverweerd.

Local offerings and places to eat
