In Zoeterwoude, cycling and walking routes wind through polders and peat meadows, alongside cheese farms, historic windmills and glimpses of local traditions. The characteristic cope landscape consists of reclaimed polders and straight drainage ditches that divide the land into strips. If you are planning a stay, you can first consider whether cycling, farm visits or cultural heritage should be the focus.

Cycling and walking through the polders

The Zoeterwoudse Veen- en droogmakerijroute is 30 kilometres long, starts at TOP Zoeterwoude and passes through the characteristic peat meadow landscape. Along the way, you can see flower-rich verges, distinctive meadow birds, wide-open views and grazing cows. The 17.2-kilometre Boerenkaasroute has a different focus: it leads to artisan cheese, ice cream and dairy farms where visitors can sample farm cheese. Information boards and audio stations along the route cover topics including farm cheese, meadow birds, sustainable farming, biodiversity and the bee landscape. The lengths of the two routes offer a concrete point of reference when deciding how much cycling to plan.

You can also experience the landscape on foot on a range of routes. The marked Stage 03 of the Romeinse Limespad is 12.5 kilometres long. Around Zoeterwoude-Dorp, it passes cheese farms set among the meadows. The Balkengatroute is a walking route through the countryside and village surroundings, crossing the Groote Westeindsche Polder, Westbroekpolder and Grote Polder. The Groote Westeindsche Polder is considered an area with particularly abundant birdlife in the wider region. Illustrated signs along the Polderpad explain the history of the landscape and how soil conditions affect what can be seen on the surface.

Cheese farms and farm experiences

Agriculture also shapes the area’s culinary scene: nine dairy farms are still operating in and around Zoeterwoude, some known for award-winning cheeses. At Boerderij De Keizershof, they make artisan farm butter, traditional buttermilk, Gouda farm cheese and Boeren-Leidse met Sleutels. On a guided tour at Kaasboerderij Van Veen, visitors can sample different cheeses and learn about the traditional production process. The tour also includes the barns, information about livestock and grazing, and the Weipoortse Vliet and the surrounding countryside. As this is a bookable experience, check the current visitor arrangements before your trip.

Boerderij ’t Geertje is a farm open to visitors, with goats, cows, chickens, sheep, pigs and ponies. The farm includes a dairy, a farm shop and a restaurant. Visitors can also rent rowing boats and canoes there and follow an experience trail around the farm. Check current visiting arrangements and opening hours, as well as boat availability and seasonal sailing dates, in advance.

Other activities cater to a range of interests: At Elza Hoeve, the cow-cuddling experience begins with an introduction to the animals’ behaviour before heading into the barn. The experience lasts around two and a half hours and includes tea or coffee and a visit to the barn in overalls and boots. The activity should be booked and checked again before your trip. At Zelfoogsttuin Bij Mei, participants can pick their own vegetables and flowers each week. From June until the first night frost, you can also pick flowers during opening hours. Streekwinkel Boer en Goed brings together homemade cheeses from local farms and regional cheeses under one roof; opening hours may change.

Windmills, nature and cultural heritage

The polder windmills tell the story of the work needed to keep the land dry. The octagonal Barremolen was built in 1661 to keep the Barrepolder dry. The Groote Molen was built in 1626 to drain the Grote Polder. Weather permitting, it is open on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am to 5 pm, except in July and August. It may be possible to visit outside its regular open turning days when the mill is operating. The Zelden van Passe polder windmill is located on the Meerburgerwatering, about 1,200 metres west of Zoeterwoude-Dorp.

Art and history also reflect local themes in the open polder landscape. On Lange Kerkepad, Hans Mes’ artwork Grutto depicts a distinctive meadow bird. On Kooikersplein in Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk, a bronze sculpture by Gerda van den Bosch of a Kooikerhondje with ducks taking flight points to the tradition of duck decoy hunting. If you plan to visit either artwork, check beforehand whether it is still there. Stichting Oud Zoeterwoude preserves stories, documents and historical objects relating to Zoeterwoude’s history and heritage in a library and object archive; check whether visitors can access it before you arrive.

When planning your stay, comparing the activities offers a clear guide: you can weigh up cycling and walking routes, farm experiences whose visitor arrangements need checking, and windmills with specific opening times. This makes it easy to tailor your plans to your interests.
